The best UK city to visit in autumn has been named, and it’s full of history and old architecture. The UK is full of incredible cities that make for enjoyable daytrips or weekend breaks. One of them, located in the north of England, is perhaps one of the most well-preserved places in the country, with one street in particular being full of charm. Autumn is a magical time when the trees turn a golden brown, and the atmosphere of places becomes more cosy, and this city is a perfect example of that.
Hazel Rickett, Travel Expert at small-group tour operator Rabbie’s, has revealed why York is the perfect city for autumn lovers, with its cobbled streets and medieval architecture. “There’s something about York in autumn that’s hard to put into words,” she said. “As the temperature drops and the evenings grow darker, the city takes on a wonderfully atmospheric quality, with its narrow cobbled streets, ancient walls and glowing pub windows creating the perfect backdrop for a seasonal escape.”

And York is apparently home to the UK’s best high street. Bishopthorpe Road was previously named the best high street in the UK for its independent shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs.
Meanwhile, York is also home to the Shambles, which is also considered one of the best streets to explore in the whole of the UK. “One of York’s most famous streets, The Shambles, is a beautifully preserved medieval lane where timber-framed buildings lean in so closely that their upper floors almost meet,” Hazel said.
“Once home to the city’s butchers, today it’s lined with independent shops, cafes and craft stores full of character. Visitors can wander its winding cobbles, browse the boutiques and soak up the timeless atmosphere that feels especially magical on a crisp autumn afternoon. It’s a wonderful place to lose track of time and experience York’s history first-hand.”

She also recommends visiting the Medieval City Walls in York, which is a roughly two-mile route around the historic centre. Explaining why this is particularly delightful in autumn, she says: “Visitors can stroll the ramparts between the historic gateways, known as bars, and look out over the Minster, the rooftops and the surrounding countryside as the trees turn shades of amber and gold.
“It’s one of the most rewarding ways to see the city and appreciate just how much history is packed into its streets.”
Autumn is perhaps also the best time to visit York for its cosy pubs and tea rooms, Hazel says, as well as York Minster, the Gothic cathedral that towers over the city.

Hazel called York a perfect city to visit during spooky season, as there are many ghost stories to be discovered here. Overall, she says autumn is the ultimate time to go to this historic English spot.
“Overall, York is a city that seems made for autumn. From the medieval charm of The Shambles to walks along the ancient walls and evenings spent in a cosy pub, it brings together history, atmosphere and warmth in a way few other UK cities can,” she says.
“For anyone looking to make the most of the season, it’s a destination that truly comes alive once autumn arrives.”
