12 Years Later, ‘Big Hero 6’ Sequel Gets New Update From Original Producer

Amid a long run of successful hits from Pixar, the studio delivered another big hit in 2014 with the release of Big Hero 6, directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. Led by a voice cast featuring Ryan Potter, Maya Rudolph, Jamie Chung, and Alan Tudyk, the story centers on 14-year-old robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who teams up with a healthcare robot named Baymax and his late brother’s university friends to form a powerful superhero team. Bringing emotion from start to finish, it quickly became a fan favorite among a slew of superhero movies released at the same time.

Along with a 90% positive critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, it ranks just outside the 10 highest-grossing movies of 2014, as it grossed about $657 million at the global box office. Now, it is one of the biggest Pixar titles brought up in conversations about stories that should add another chapter to its legacy. After the last decade brought sequels for films like The Incredibles, Toy Story (twice), and Inside Out, Big Hero 6 feels like an entry that could get that same treatment. Unfortunately, that sentiment does not appear to be there from those making the movies.

Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb for Hexed, Disney producer Bob Conli addressed the chances of a sequel to Big Hero 6 ever happening. While he admitted to loving the movie, on which he was a producer and provided additional voices, he bluntly told us that “we’re not going to see one for a while” and did not offer any additional details on the matter:

“Thank you, thank you. I love ‘Big Hero 6’ too. We’re not going to see one for a while, let’s put it that way.”

Discussions have flooded the internet for years about what could happen in a sequel to Big Hero 6, which continues to play a role in other Disney-related media. Disney XD hosted the release of Big Hero 6: The Series from 2017 to 2021, and Square Enix even included San Fransokyo as a playable world in 2019’s Kingdom Hearts 3 (which is also getting its own Disney+ series).

Unfortunately, these quotes seem to dispel the idea of Disney developing a sequel to Big Hero 6, leaving Hiro and Baymax’s journey still on hold for the foreseeable future. While this could change at any time, Pixar is now focusing on its next original story, 2027’s Gatto, along with two highly anticipated sequels in Incredibles 3 and Coco 2.

Big Hero 6 is streaming on Disney+.
