New York officials’ bizarre reactions to ICE shooting: Letters

The Issue: City and state officials respond to the shooting of a criminal illegal immigrant by an ICE agent.

Congressional Candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier wants Oscar Belgal — an illegal alien with prior arrests for drugs and armed robbery — to roam the streets of New York City (“Oh, for pity’s sake!,” Oct. 12).

When Belgal was not terrorizing the community, he was, according to Chevalier, “Just being a good dad.” Perhaps he should go be a “good dad” in his country of origin.

Have you had enough of the DSA? If so, vote accordingly.

The recent Bronx shooting involving an ICE agent underscores the dangers of policies that allow repeat offenders to remain on our streets.

This is eerily reminiscent of the case of NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran, who faces more than seven years in prison after intervening to stop a fleeing criminal.

Law enforcement officers are tasked with protecting the public, yet political agendas and sanctuary-city policies can make that job far more dangerous.

Police, ICE and federal narcotics agents deserve the support and tools necessary to enforce the law.

The violent record of an illegal alien doesn’t matter to Chevalier. She clearly doesn’t care about the legal residents of New York.

Manual Williams, her GOP opponent, is a better choice.

Westport, Conn.

This ICE shooting has brought out the worst in Mayor Mamdani. Not only has he demanded that ICE be prevented from protecting New Yorkers, he now wants to restrict the NYPD from enforcing the law. Vote him out.

It’s hardly surprising that our politicians have referred to this illegal immigrant and alleged gangbanger, Oscar Belgal, as “our neighbor” and fellow “New Yorker.”

Our leaders in New York could care less about public safety. They yearn for a Biden-like replay of migrant caravans invading our southern border to entrench their own political power.

Had New York City not been a sanctuary city, this illegal alien might have been deported before the shooting occurred.

Whether the officer was justified in firing his weapon is a separate question that the facts must resolve, and the mayor and others should refrain from prejudging the officer’s actions before the investigation is complete.

Sanctuary policies can have serious consequences, and New Yorkers deserve an honest evaluation of the facts.

Andre Montero

Brooklyn

It’s hard to believe that New Yorkers would agree with its radical elected officials and have more sympathy for a hard-core criminal than the victims of crime.

Mayor Mamdani and Chevalier only have appeal because they have good interpersonal skills and are articulate. Don’t let emotional reasoning bias fool you.

Martin Garfinkle

Staten Island

Gov. Hochul, Mayor Mamdani, Attorney General Letitia James, and Chevalier continue to defend not only our homegrown criminals but illegal-immigrant criminals, as well.

From their bail laws to sanctuary policies, they always place the law-breakers ahead of the law-abiding. Election Day is nearing, and New Yorkers need to show up and save our state.

James McCaffrey

After reading Mamdani’s statement on the ICE shooting, one wonders what the definition of “neighbor” is.

Belgal is not only here illegally, but also has a long rap sheet.

Had he been detained and surrendered to ICE directly out of initial custody, there would have been no need to confront him on a city street.

It’s time for New York City to do away with its status as a sanctuary city and obey federal law.
