Denzel Washington’s 132-Minute Remake of an Action Adventure Classic Shoots Onto Free Streaming

Ten years after it was released, Denzel Washington’s remake of one of the greatest westerns ever made is about to ride onto free streaming. Washington is arguably one of the most iconic action stars still working today, having delivered his own brand of John Wick-esque justice (coincidentally, the same year as John Wick) in The Equalizer trilogy. Washington and Antoine Fuqua are even set to reunite for a fourth and potentially fifth installment in The Equalizer franchise. But it’s Washington and Fuqua’s 2016 partnership — a remake of one of the greatest action movies of all time — that’s officially set a free streaming release date.

Also starring Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard, Lee Byung-hun, Luke Grimes, Jonathan Joss, and Haley Bennett, The Magnificent Seven remake will stream for free very soon. 2016’s The Magnificent Seven was recently announced to be joining Tubi’s November lineup of free movies. Tubi is a free-streaming platform that lets audiences watch popular movies for free with adverts. The Magnificent Seven rides onto Tubi on Nov. 1. The film is expected to remain on Tubi for a month, as the platform typically operates on one-month contracts. Although that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ Is a Decent Remake of a True Western Classic

It was almost never going to be as good as the original, but Denzel Washington’s The Magnificent Seven is still a decent action movie, carried by the charisma of its star-studded cast. The plot deviates from the 1960 original, but the general premise remains the same. Based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven follows seven gunfighters who begrudgingly come together to save a small town from a wealthy villain. In the case of the remake, Washington’s band protects Rose Creek from a filthy rich industrialist who wants to seize the town for its mines.

Again, it’s nowhere near as good as the original, which is often called one of the greatest westerns ever made. However, 2016’s The Magnificent Seven still scored decent reviews and reactions, mainly because of its quippy dialogue and great action. It holds a 64% Rotten Tomatoes rating, with a higher 71% user score. “The Magnificent Seven never really lives up to the superlative in its title — or the classics from which it draws inspiration — but remains a moderately diverting action thriller on its own merits,” reads the RT Critics Consensus.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ Couldn’t Live Up to the Name at the Box Office

Unfortunately, all of that star power and the merit of the original movie couldn’t save The Magnificent Seven at the box office. Produced for $90 million (westerns are notoriously expensive to make), The Magnificent Seven failed to double its budget, grossing $162 million worldwide. That figure doesn’t even factor in the marketing costs, which typically match the production budget.
