Ryanair and easyJet new hand luggage fee warning for all UK passengers | Travel News | Travel

The universal rule is designed to make baggage allowances clearer and flight prices easier to compare. The rules mean the bag must measure no more than 40cm x 30cm x 15cm, or fit under the seat in front.

However, airlines will still be able to set there own baggage policies and offer different prices for those who choose to travel without a larger hang-luggage allowance. The new rule will apply from October 23, 2027 after being published in the EU’s Official Journal on October 2. From this date passengers can take the one small item into the cabin without any extra costs; this could be a hangbag or a small rucksack.

Airlines must display fares that include an allowance for a piece of hand luggage by default before the booking process begins. They are still entitled to offer cheaper fares without that allowance, so it is passenger’s responsibility to check what is included.

Although it means travellers will be able to take one item for free it does not establish a single EU-wide size or weight allowance for a larger cabin suitcase with each individual airline still having flexibility over their baggage policies. If there are safety concerns these small bags may still be required to be moved to the hold without any additional charges.

The rules are based on the destination of the flight and will apply to passengers departing from airports in the EU. This means for many Brits, the departure airport will be important when checking baggage charges.

Just because a flight is leaving the UK, it may not automatically be covered just because it is heading to an EU destination. Passengers should continue to check the baggage allowance and fees for each flight and return journey.
