Burt Reynolds’ “Unflinching” 54-Year-Old Adventure Thriller Masterpiece Officially Sets New Release

Before establishing himself as the definitive mustache-sporting charmer of Smokey and the Bandit, Burt Reynolds proved his serious dramatic mettle in a very different kind of movie vehicle. Shifting away from his rugged television roots, the actor took a fearless leap into a harrowing wilderness nightmare that turned into a benchmark for cinematic survival. Now, 54 years later, this “unflinching” adventure thriller masterpiece is officially gearing up to prove that it can still outlast the competition with a landmark new release.

Released in 1972, Deliverance follows four city-dwelling friends as they venture into the untamed Georgia wilderness for a canoeing trip that rapidly devolves into a bloody fight for survival when they are savagely attacked by the backwoods locals. Directed by John Boorman and based on the novel by James Dickey, the gripping thriller became a massive box-office and critical sensation, raking in over $46 million against a $2 million budget, while holding a stellar 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, the survival classic is gearing up to leap off the screen with terrifying clarity as it makes its long-awaited debut on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

The Criterion Collection has officially announced a 4K Blu-ray release of Deliverance, boasting a new 4K digital restoration supervised and approved by Boorman himself. The presentation incorporates Dolby Vision HDR and includes both an uncompressed monaural track and an alternate 5.1 DTS-HD mix, offering a substantial visual and audio upgrade over the standard 1080p Blu-ray editions of years gone by.

Deliverance‘s latest physical media release comes wrapped in a striking cover design adapted from the original theatrical poster. The package also features an extensive selection of bonus materials across its two discs. Highlights include a newly filmed interview with renowned critic Mark Harris, a vintage 1977 television appearance from the author on The Dick Cavett Show, and an audio recording of Charles Bethea’s oral history of the film. These new supplements are paired with archival legacy features, including the original director’s commentary, a four-part making-of documentary, and a roundtable discussion with the cast.
