The Creator Is Due to Land in Theaters Later This Month
“Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself,” the official synopsis for The Creator reads. “Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.”
Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla), who co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz, The Creator stars John David Washington (Tenet, BlacKkKlansman), Gemma Chan (Eternals, CRazy Rich Asians), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins), Sturgill Simpson (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Hunt), and Allison Janney (The Help, I, Tonya), with newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles starring as the mysterious child who could hold the key to the human/AI war.
While taking inspiration from the likes of such science fiction classics as Blade Runner, director Gareth Edwards was careful to avoid certain tropes that have come inherent in stories about humans and robots. Namely, the twist that a seemingly human character has been a machine all along. And it certainly sounds like his efforts have paid off.
“I wanted to take that off the table. In this film, it’s visually very clear who is AI and who isn’t,” the filmmaker said. “Even with the more humanoid ones. I wanted something like that classic ‘from-ape-to-man’ silhouette. So, you can see the evolution of the robots, from early, boxy, Sony Walkman-like ones, all the way up to the more visually sophisticated ones with human faces, which are called ‘simulants.'”
The Creator is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 29, by 20th Century Studios.
