After just one day, The Matrix star’s new folklore-inspired crime thriller is already one of the biggest shows on streaming. Since starring as the iconic heroine Trinity in The Matrix trilogy (it’s best to just forget that the fourth movie ever happened), Carrie-Anne Moss has bounced from one interesting project to another. She lent her talents to Netflix’s Daredevil, the hit sci-fi series Humans, and Christopher Nolan’s Memento, among many other shows and movies. But it’s her newest TV series, an adaptation of a sold-out stage play, that’s taking over on streaming.
Written by Kat Sandler, who also acted as showrunner for the series, YAGA is now one of the biggest shows on streaming. The darkly comedic crime thriller was released on AMC+ on Oct. 23, and it has wasted no time blasting up the streaming charts. At the time of writing, YAGA is the second most popular series on AMC+ in the US. The John Wick-esque action thriller, Kill Jackie, holds the top spot and has remained in the top 10 for 20 days. Meanwhile, third and fourth place are held by the very on-brand October movies, Hallowarrior and Halloween, respectively.
‘YAGA’ Is a Dark and Twisted Crime Thriller
There’s only one thing better than a good crime thriller: a good crime thriller that blends its violent plot with the folklore aesthetic of Blair Witch, The Wicker Man, and The Witcher. It’s an odd blend, but it really works. As the title suggests, the series toys with the Slavic folklore creature, the Baba Yaga. No, it’s not John Wick; it’s the vicious crone who eats children and lives in a cottage on chicken legs.
The series stars Heated Rivalry‘s Noah Reid as Charlie Rapp, a private investigator who journeys to an ominous coastal town to find Henry Park, a missing young person. Teaming up with a local sergeant, the pair interrogate the local community while following a bizarre set of folkloric-inspired clues.
‘YAGA’ Is a Near-Perfect Crime Thriller
We promised that YAGA was a great crime thriller, and Rotten Tomatoes has proven us right. The series holds an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score. “In YAGA, the small-town gossip is juicy, the desires are questionable, and the woods are looking awfully witchy in this darkly comic supernatural mystery,” reads the RT Critics’ Consensus.
An 80% score is good, but it’s the audience score that is truly impressive. YAGA holds a near-perfect 96% Rotten Tomatoes user score. So far, just over 100 RT users have submitted ratings, so that score could easily change in the coming days. But debuting at 96% is still insanely good.
