Prediction: this UK penny stock will soon soar by 140%

With penny stocks, it’s always worth watching for depressed share prices coupled with upbeat broker price targets. Kodal Minerals (LSE: KOD) shares have fallen 53% since a 52-week high in January, to just 0.29p.

And investment bank Canaccord Genuity put a 0.70p target on the shares in mid-October. That’s 141% ahead of where we are at the time of writing. Let’s take a closer look…

Should you buy Kodal Minerals Plc shares today?

Before you decide, please take a moment to review this report first. Despite ongoing uncertainties from US tariffs to global conflicts, Mark Rogers and his team believe many UK shares still trade at substantial discounts, offering savvy investors plenty of potential opportunities to learn about.

That’s why this could be an ideal time to secure this valuable research – Mark’s analysts have scoured the markets to reveal 5 of his favourite long-term ‘Buys’. Please, don’t make any big decisions before seeing them.

What it does

Kodal Minerals is a lithium miner, working in West Africa. Its flagship prospect is the Bougouni Lithium Project in Southern Mali, which it develops alongside joint venture partner Hainan Mining. Lithium’s in huge demand for making batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage.

We heard this at interim results time…

Operationally, the first half of 2026 was a period of solid progress as Bougouni delivered its first full period of commercial production… Our focus for the second half remains on continuous operational improvement at the Ngoualana open pit and the DMS processing plant, alongside strict cost control to maintain strong operating margins.

CEO Bernard Aylward (30 September)

Many small operators like this are recording losses. But chairman Robert Wooldridge had some reassuring words, speaking of the results “marking a pivotal transition into profitability for Kodal with a Group profit of approximately £3.5 million.”

Strong operating cash flow also helped the company to “fully repay and terminate its external loan facility with Hainan,” he added. Analysts predict growing net cash over the next few years.

All that glistens..?

At what sounds like a major pivotal point, Kodal Minerals might look like a ‘fill-yer-boots’ penny stock right now. But there are some reasons for caution.

Canaccord Genuity’s latest prediction is actually down from the 1.2p price target it set in September. When an optimistic analyst might be having second thoughts, I’d say private investors like us need to take stock. The recommendation remains the Speculative Buy it previously was.

The downgrade came on 13 October, the same day Kodal released its Bougouni Lithium Project quarterly update. Lower production than expected, technical mining difficulties, and reduced full-year guidance all took a bit of the shine off the optimism.

The future for lithium demand must also be a risk. Lithium has some flaws as a battery material, as we see in the many battery fires that have made the news. Although alternative battery technologies are progressing, they do seem to be perpetually just round the corner.

Bottom line?

There are clear risks here. But the disappointing October update looks like a short-term hiccup to me. And even in the face of battery developments, I can see lithium being in high demand for quite a few years yet.

I won’t buy Kodal Minerals shares because micro-cap growth shares are just not my thing these days. But a younger me would almost certainly have it near the top of my list of candidates for a small speculative buy. I reckon anyone with a growth strategy should consider it, even if I stick to my favoured safer stocks.
