Why Yellowstone’s Success Wasn’t Enough For Creator Taylor Sheridan To Retire

Taylor Sheridan planned to ride off into the sunset after “Yellowstone,” but the chance to buy a massive Texas ranch brought him back to the negotiating table with Paramount and helped expand his empire of TV shows.

During an appearance on the “Rodeo Time” podcast, Sheridan shared that he intended to retire on his Weatherford, Texas ranch once “Yellowstone” concluded. Debt-free at the time, the writer-director liked the idea before the Marion family estate offered him the chance to buy the Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, where he filmed parts of “Yellowstone.” “I was going to put my feet up and show horses, and have my little hobby herd over here, and that was it,” Sheridan said. “I knew that if I bought this ranch, I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while.”

Sheridan led an investment group that purchased the historic 266,000-acre property, which had a reported asking price of $330 million. According to Sheridan, he didn’t have nearly enough money to afford the ranch on his own, so he returned to Paramount (then ViacomCBS) to negotiate a more lucrative overall deal. “They were terrified that I was going to go to greener pastures and leave them and go somewhere else, which I probably was,” Sheridan continued. “But once this happened, I called them, and I said, ‘You know what? I think I’m ready to make an overall deal.’ And they said, ‘That’s great. Do you have a number in mind?’ And I said, ‘Why yes, I do.'”

Taylor Sheridan is moving on from Paramount soon

Taylor Sheridan isn’t giving up his TV and movie-making craft for a relaxing life on the ranch. In 2025, it was reported that Sheridan signed a massive, five-year deal with NBCUniversal covering television projects, beginning January 1, 2029. His separate film agreement began in 2026. With his television agreement at Paramount running through 2028, Sheridan appears to have his work cut out for him, as his ongoing series include “Lioness,” “Tulsa King,” and “The Madison.”

Sheridan has also made clear that he isn’t interested in compromising his creative vision. “I spent the first 37 years of my life compromising,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “When I quit acting, I decided that I am going to tell my stories my way, period. If you don’t want me to tell them, fine. Give them back and I’ll find someone who does — or I won’t, and then I’ll read them in some freaking dinner theater. But I won’t compromise. There is no compromising.”

Speaking of Sheridan’s current TV projects, “Landman” recently kicked off production on its third season, with a 2027 return anticipated for the Billy Bob Thornton-led drama. “Tulsa King” has also started filming Season 5 as Season 4 airs on Paramount+. Elsewhere, “Lioness” awaits a Season 4 greenlight following a stunning finale cliffhanger. As Sheridan prepares for a new journey at NBCUniversal, his Paramount shows won’t go away anytime soon.
