Writer and director David S. Goyer opened up about filming the comic book action sequel, Blade:Trinity, stating that making the follow-up was the “worst experience” of his professional career. While chatting with Josh Horowitz on the most recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer offered further details regarding the now infamous problems that occurred behind the scenes of Blade:Trinity, some of which have been recounted over the years primarily by comedian Patton Oswalt who played Hedges in the 2004 sequel.
Oswalt has been opened about the shocking instances that happened during filming. These events include Oswalt alleging that the film’s star Wesley Snipes would sometimes refuse to leave his trailer, that the actor also supposedly tried to strangle Goyer at one point, and that eventually, Snipes only communicated with the director via Post-It notes. Oh, and he would only respond to name the name ‘Blade.’
While speaking on the podcast’s latest episode The Unborn director didn’t hold back his feeling about working on Blade: Trinity and called the film “the worst experience of (his) professional career.”
David S. Goyer Says That Filming Blade:Trinity Was “An Incredibly Fraught Experience”
Goyer went on to explain why working on the film was such a bad experience for him, saying:
“It was an incredibly fraught experience it was personally very difficult. I was very depressed afterwards. You talked about one of the nadirs it was definitely that this is even before the movie came out.”
He continued, praising Snipes as “one of the greatest actors of the current generation” and believes that the actor was difficult to work with due to the issues he was going through at the time.
“Despite all of that I still think Wesley is one of the greatest actors of the current generation and it’s a tragedy that he’s not acting as much as — I mean the guy is brilliant uh he was going through a lot of trouble at the time. All that tax stuff was happening right as we started and in fact on our first day of filming there was this whole kerfuffle because the IRS had withheld like a bunch of his money and that was all going on in the background and it was…that’s kind of all I’ll say about it for now but it was it was a mess.”
When asked whether he would attempt to chat with Snipes if he ever happened to encounter the actor, the director pondered the question before replying:
“I don’t know… I might, I might try…..I go to Al-Anon because of you know events in my life and so that’s given me a different perspective on things.”
Notably, the Demolition Man star has previously addressed some of the rumors regarding problems on the set of Blade: Trinity. In 2020, Snipes told The Guardian, “If I had tried to strangle David Goyer, you probably wouldn’t be talking to me now. A black guy with muscles strangling the director of a movie is going to jail, I guarantee you.”
The action horror movie Blade:Trinity was directed by Goyer and written by Goyer, Marv Wolfman, and Gene Colan. Blade:Trinity starred Snipes (reprising his role as the iconic vampire hunter), Kris Kristofferson, Dominic Purcell, Jessica Biel, Ryan Reynolds, and Parker Posey.
Blade is next due to appear in a reboot for the MCU in which he will be portrayed by Oscar winner Mahershala Ali.
