Adam Sandler is one of the most recognized comedy actors in the world. Despite the criticism that many of his films receive, the comedian continues to demonstrate that he is a big star thanks to the good performance of his movies at the box office and on streaming platforms. But, unexpectedly, one of the biggest records of his career belongs to a film saga in which his face is not even shown.
The Hotel Transylvania franchise began more than 10 years ago, in 2012, with the release of its first film directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. The story centers on Count Dracula, owner of the famous titular hotel, where monsters from all over the world go to take some time off. During the celebration of his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday, an unexpected visitor appears at the scene: a human named Jonathan.
Count Dracula will do everything he can so that none of the monsters or his daughter discover that there is an intruder in their secret place, but little did he imagine that his daughter would end up falling in love with the young human. That first film was followed by three sequels, a television series and three short films that complemented the original story, along with a few video games.
Hotel Transylvania stars Sandler as Count Dracula, Selena Gomez as Mavis, and Andy Samberg as Jonathan. The Sony Pictures Animation franchise has been a success since the very beginning, not only because of its incredible cast, but also because of its fun stories that mix elements of the monster universe with the real world, and lots of comedy. That is why it is no surprise that they are one of the most successful projects in Sandler’s long career.
The Hotel Transylvania Saga Dominates Adam Sandler’s Filmography
Although Sandler did not return for the most recent film of the franchise, nor was he part of the series, the first three entries of the saga maintain an important record for the actor.
As reported by The Numbers, the first three installments of Hotel Transylvania currently occupy the top 3 spots of the actor’s highest-grossing films globally. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation takes first place with $527 million, followed by Hotel Transylvania 2 with $469 million and Hotel Transylvania with $378. The top 5 is completed by Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2.
Obviously, it’s impossible to ensure that the Hotel Transylvania films won’t be dethroned by three other future movies starring Sandler. However, with the actor devoting almost all of his time and energy to making stories for Netflix, a cinematographic project big and successful enough to change those numbers may never come along.
However, Sandler’s most recent film for the streaming platform, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah managed to break another important record in the actor’s career which was completely unexpected, so surprises may always be waiting just around the corner.
