How To Romance Halsin In Baldur’s Gate 3

Quick Links

One important aspect outside of combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 is romance, which involves understanding how to properly pave the way with each companion, including Halsin. Halsin is a male druid that the party will encounter after reaching a certain point in the main storyline. However, he’s unique in regards to romancing him.

Unlike the other camp companions you will initially encounter, Halsin will not initially be a true companion. He will set up a space in your camp, but he won’t be joining missions just yet. This can make it exceptionally hard to win his favor, but he’s worth it since his Druid Class in Baldur’s Gate 3 makes him one of the more unique romance partners and a valuable ally.

How To Save Halsin

First and foremost, before players can romance Halsin, they need to have acquired him. This will happen in Act 1 when reaching Druid’s Grove. The party will be tasked with rescuing Halsin safely from a nearby Goblin Camp where he is being held prisoner. To rescue him, three different Goblin leaders must be defeated, including Minthara, Gut, and Drog. Note that there is a way to recruit Minthara with Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3 instead of killing her, but it will require a little more work.

Once each of them has been defeated within the Goblin Camp, head down to the Worg Pens to find Halsin being held in one of the cells there guarded by Goblins. He will be in his wild Bear form and assist in the fight that ensues upon releasing him. After saving him, there will be a celebration held in camp where he will settle in, but he will still be unable to officially join the party.

How To Make Halsin A Party Member

Halsin of Baldur's Gate 3 talks to the player in camp.

As stated, from this point on, Halsin will be in camp for general chatting and additional dialogue, but he won’t be unlocked as a party member, meaning you won’t be able to ask him to join you, at least for now. Unfortunately, the option there won’t become available until Act 2 of Baldu’rs Gate 3 when players venture to the Underdark and Moonrise Towers. Once reaching this part in the main storyline, Halsin will become more active in the story again, and though he won’t immediately join the group, he will venture out from camp once the party reaches the Last Light Inn.

Once there, before heading upstairs to speak with Isobel at Last Light Inn, there will be an ill man on a bed on the first floor in a room off to the right. Attempting to speak with him will reveal something has come over him, and he needs an item of significance to bring him back. This man, Art, will also be mumbling a song mentioning a boy named Thaniel.

If you’ve already spoken with Halsin, you may have heard this name; if not, return to camp and talk to him to learn that he is searching for a boy named Thaniel. Inform him of Art’s song, and Halsin will leave to meet you at the Inn.

After speaking with Halsin at the Inn, where he will now reside for a while, the party will be sent out to find something to bring Art back so he may share information about Thaniel. The item of significance that is needed is a Lute, specifically one that will be taken off the body of Malus Thorm’s body, a man who can be found in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s House of Healing. The party will have a couple of different options when approaching the situation, but in the end, the same result will occur, and the party will need to recover the Lute by defeating him.

Take the Lute back to Last Light Inn and play it for Art to wake him. After speaking with both Art and Halsin, head out to where Halsin has asked you to meet him. He plans to create a portal to retrieve Thaniel and needs you to guard it. Guarding it will entail taking on waves of enemies for three consecutive rounds, all while keeping the portal safe, which has an HP of 150. This is quite the task; just be sure to play to strengths against these creatures and focus on using ranged attacks and AOE when possible.

When he returns, the party will return to Last Light Inn to learn that part of Thaniel’s soul is missing. The other half, Oliver, will be at a House in Deep Shadows. There are a couple of ways to go about this, but ultimately, the goal is to convince Oliver to return with the party to Last Light Inn. Finally, the last step will be completing the “Moonrise Towers” quest to defeat Ketheric Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once this is complete, Halsin will become an official party member who will happily accompany you to Baldur’s Gate.

How To Romance Halsin

Now that he’s a companion, the option to romance Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3 becomes much easier. Note that if the Shadowcurse was not lifted at the end of Act 2, you will not be able to romance him. Those who have spoken with him before lifting the curse know that it’s always on his mind, so he will not have time for anything else without it lifted. As long as that is accomplished, then romancing Halsin is similar to romancing anyone else: select choices and dialogue that earn his approval and make an effort to socialize with him frequently.

Luckily, Halsin is one of the more open, romanceable options, meaning that he doesn’t mind sharing you with another. So players may not be forced to stop their current romance to pursue him. However, not everyone will be willing.

If players are already pursuing someone, Halsin will ask you to get their permission before things go further.

Certain romance partners like Astarion and Shadowheart may not mind, but the more demanding romance partners like Gale and Lae’zel may be less thrilled with the idea. Once players have ended their previous romance or gained consent, they may proceed.

Halsin is easily pleased since he is more of a general “good” character. Simply put, be kind, respect nature and animals, help refugees, and get to know him. As long as choices fall into those general categories, Halsin will approve, and the bond will grow. Once the approval is high enough, Halsin’s love scene will initiate during one of the long rests in camp. Again, if you still need to, Halsin will ask you to get consent from your other romance partner, if there is one.

As for the actual scenes that occur with Halsin, there will be two different options. Halsin will turn into his bear form at the start of the scene regardless; whether he stays in that form is entirely up to the player. He may continue the scene in his bear form if desired, or players may ask that he return to his Elf form, and the scene will continue from there. Once this has occurred, players are officially romancing Halsin from this point on in their playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3.
