After the premiere of the new Goosebumps series on Disney+, reviving the classic 90s television show, R. L. Stine talks about the future of another great franchise based on his stories, the Fear Street film saga.
The three films of the trilogy were filmed together and premiered on Netflix just days apart in 2021, mixing elements of classic slashers, Stine’s original material and featuring a cast with young promises and already established stars of the streaming platform, like Sadie Sink from Stranger Things. This combination managed to attract a large audience, made up of horror fans, readers of the author and followers of some of the actors, which helped to make the Fear Street trilogy a major hit, leading the audience to think that a huge franchise would be built around the story.
And while no details have been revealed about a potential sequel or spinoffs, it seems that plans to expand the Fear Street universe are still underway. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Stine confirmed that there more movies coming in the near future:
“I’ve done everything you can think of and it’s all so far beyond what I ever dreamed. When we started out I said, ‘Let’s do two or three [Goosebumps books].’ I never dreamed that it would last this long. It’s all a big surprise to me. I’m excited to have a new TV show going [on Disney+] and we’ll probably do more Fear Street movies too, and you know, that’s a thrill for me.”
What’s the Fear Street Trilogy About?
The first film, titled Fear Street Part One: 1994, takes place in that same year and is set in the town of Shadyside, called the murder capital of the United States, totally opposite to its neighboring city, the wealthy Sunnyside. This difference between the two places is due, as the young people of Shadyside believe, to the curse of an ancient witch named Sarah Fier.
The main plot centers on Deena, an outcast teenager from Shadyside who finds herself heartbroken after ending her secret relationship with Sam, who has moved to Sunnyside. Both will discover that there is a much deeper bond that unites them when a series of murders begins to instill panic, especially in Deena, Sam and their friends, who are pursued by a group of masked killers. The film ends with Sam being possessed by the witch, and Deena having to figure out how to free her.
In the second film, titled Fear Street Part Two: 1978, the story takes place in a summer camp in the late 70s, where another series of murders deepens the belief in the curse that falls on Shadyside. One of the few survivors of that massacre is Christine Berman, whom Deena and her brother ask for help to save Sam, which will lead them to discover that the romance between the two girls is much older than they imagined and is related to the curse. To break it, they must join all the parts of Sarah Fier’s body.
In Fear Street Part Three: 1666, after putting the witch’s body parts together, Deena has a vision that shows her Sarah’s life in 1666, which will give her the pieces she needs to put together the puzzle that will help her reveal the mystery behind the curse and save Shadyside, Sam, and all their friends.
