Halloween is the perfect time to see everyone’s favorite Disney Princesses with a spooky horror twist, and that’s exactly what a number of great cosplayers have done. Disney has been going for over 100 years, and in that time, the studio has introduced many magical Disney Princesses to the world. From Snow White and Cinderella to modern additions like Elsa and Merida, Disney is great at creating beautiful and inspiring young women characters kids love.
Early Disney Princess movies were often in danger and needed rescuing from their prince and true love. However, this has changed with the times, and many of the modern Disney Princesses are strong and independent. Despite the shift away from being helpless, the Disney Princesses remain figures that are full of hope, creativity, beauty, and positivity. So when these things are removed, and they become figures of horror and fear, they can be incredibly creative and innovative.
12 Rapunzel Keeps Quiet In Her Tower
Instagram user lily_on_the_moon recreates an incredibly faithful and true-to-life cosplay of Rapunzel from Tangled, except for one significant difference. In the post, she outlines how Rapunzel has lost any and all hope of being rescued, and with that, she has decided to sew her lips shut and never sing again as a way to stop her captor from using her power for evil. The second image provides a closer look at the painful procedure and the third gives a preview of the wider series this user is creating of twisted fairytales. This is amazing work and thoroughly creepy.
11 Elsa’s Frozen Heart
Elsa is a pretty cool character in general, choosing to exclude herself from wider society and trying to avoid too much interaction. Playing with the concept from the first Frozen film of a frozen heart and hurting people she loves, Instagram user darksail_cos delivers a new take on the Ice Queen as something quite drastically more monstrous. The pale white hair and skin, and the blue dress make her a dead ringer for Elsa, but the frost covering her skin and her eye make her a pretty chilling character, all things considered — not to mention the bloodied heart that she grips tightly as blood rolls down her arm.
10 Jasmine Chose Jafar
Aladdin almost had a terrifying end when Jafar gained control of the genie and began to morph the world around him to suit his dark desires. However, Instagram user blackcherry.jpg helps to prove just how awful that potential future could have been. Jasmine is an object of abject horror with glowing eyes and a blood-red costume in this image. There also appears to be a smattering of blood around her jet-black lips, possibly belonging to her faithful pet tiger, or her former lover Aladdin.
9 Beast Hurt Belle
Beauty and the Beast is a beautiful story where two seemingly opposite characters find a common connection and fall deeply in love. Instagram user tatiana_enchanted delivers a different ending to the love story. In full Belle cosplay, she has a massive scar from what appears to be claws over her right eye. Beast was originally cursed to be a terrifying creature for all time if he was unable to see inner beauty and overcome his arrogance. It looks like he didn’t figure things out in time and laid harm to the kind-hearted Belle.
8 Rapunzel In Twisted
TikTok user @dollfacearchitect does a great job recreating the Rapunzel look from Tangled, but after a moment, she transitions to present a very different image. Rapunzel is bruised, bleeding, and wounded, and one can only imagine what harm came her way and caused the injuries. As a prisoner in a high tower, it’s possible that she leaped from her tower in desperation to get away from Mother Gothel. The injuries immediately change the fairytale into something much more sinister and twisted.
7 Snow White Ate The Poison Apple
The first feature-length Disney animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, debuted in 1937 and was a retelling of the famous fairytale from the Brothers Grimm. When Snow White loses her mother and her father remarries, she grows up largely in isolation until her wicked stepmother, the Queen, sees the young girl’s beauty increasing to surpass her own. In an effort to secure her position as the most beautiful person, the Queen ultimately poisons Snow White. TikTok user @sarah_lou_who delivers a look at a more thoroughly infected Snow White who perhaps didn’t recover or experienced lasting damage from the poison.
6 Merida Bravely Takes An Arrow To The Face
Merida is one of the more modern Disney Princesses, appearing in the 2012 Pixar feature Brave. Her curly red locks make her distinctly different from the other Disney Princesses, as does her thick Scottish accent. Instagram user lariihmendesz delivers a solid cosplay with the voluminous hair and even includes Merida’s favorite pastime of archery. But it appears there has been an accident, and Merida’s arrow now resides in her cheeks.
5 Beauty Is The Beast
Instagram user anatazulay_ offers a different interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, with the two title characters being one. With some impressive makeup, she has turned the left side of her face into a faithful recreation of the Beast even including his fangs. The right side delivers a slightly different take on Belle, with some yellow eye shadow evoking her ballroom gown from the film. The duality and creativity here are to be commended as an excellent interpretation of the original story with everyone having both beauty and beastliness residing in them.
4 Hooked On Ariel’s Little Mermaid
Continuing the close-up trend with a major focus on make-up, hair, and getting the eyes just right, Instagram user lynzmua has the full red lips, long vibrant red hair, and piercing green eyes of Ariel, plus a fishhook. All the beauty and grace of The Little Mermaid‘s protagonist is on display, but it appears she has incurred some bad luck by getting captured by some fishermen. The look is simple but ties together incredibly well delivering a thoughtful and imaginative redesign of the original as a horror cosplay version of the Disney Princess.
3 Disney Princess Halloween Party
Katie Quick-Rhodes posted this image on Pinterest featuring several warped reimaginings of the Disney Princesses. From the black-eyed Snow White who appears to have seen some horrors, to the horrific Cinderella with a scarecrow face, this image delivers a lot in one simple image. The attendees for this event, whatever it was, delivered on their costumes and went all out on the theme. Other Disney characters appearing in the image are Raya, Pochahontas, and Alice.
2 Off To Work Snow White Goes
Typically, Snow White appears as a young helpless girl taken in by a group of dwarves. However, Pinterest user VintageBunny offers up a very different look at the character, one who decides to pick up a pickaxe of her own and take matters into her own hands. Complete with blood, burn marks, and glowing eyes, this certainly isn’t the Snow White from the Disney classic. The costume has been adapted for a typical Halloween party with more of a focus on showing off the wearer’s figure, but the added horror elements elevate this look into something that is also a scary twist to the story.
1 Elsa Is Frozen
Posted on Pinterest by the user Fx Freak, this version of Elsa is grizzly. The cosplayer makes it look like Elsa is gradually being taken over by the ice as it breaks out over her skin and turns her into something much less human. The hair and dress are also spot on for the character and make this iteration incredibly accurate and impressive as well as a truly terrifying Disney Princess reimagined with horror twists.
