Art for the relaunched Captain Marvel series is redefining her energy powers for the dawn of the character’s new era. This new series, combined with The Marvels hitting theaters in November, suggests Carol Danvers is about to close out 2023 with a bang, as she continues to ascend to the status of Marvel Comics’ premiere hero.
Captain Marvel #1 – from writer Alyssa Wong, and artist Jan Bazaldua, taking over after Kelly Thompson’s historic 50-issue run with the character – will reshape the landscape of Captain Marvel stories, including new allies, new villains, a new look, and upgrades to her powers.
One of those things may be Carol forming her energy into physical objects, like a sword as seen in Joshua “Sway” Swaby’s gorgeous variant cover.
Captain Marvel Will Need An Upgrade In The Coming Fight
In a press release from Marvel Comics for Captain Marvel #1, writer Alyssa Wong noted their excitement to take the reins: “I hope everyone enjoys what we’ve got coming!” The new run finds the leader of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes pairing up with an unlikely partner – a street thief named Yuna, with the pair targeted by a new enemy called the Omen – and during the course of all this, Carol Danvers also gets a costume redesign, courtesy of superstar cover artist Jen Bartel. Already one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, this preview suggests that Captain Marvel could be getting even stronger in this new series.
Captain Marvel #1 kicks off with a reality-devouring entity known as the Undone targeting Carol Danvers, after realizing that Captain Marvel is the only hero powerful enough to stop it. Taking Carol out of the game is easier said than done, as many villains before have learned. With superhuman strength and durability, even if the Undone is resistant to her energy blasts, the fact that she won’t stay down in a fight can be even harder to deal with. As artist Jan Bazaldua says of the character, Carol is, “a very self-confident woman with nothing she cannot face, and not just because she has super-powers, but because she has inner strength.”
The More Carol Changes, The More She Stays The Same
Carol’s strength will be tested in every way during her fight with the Undone, and its harbinger the Omen – and as Joshua Swaby’s art for the debut issue hints, this Captain Marvel series will feature the character’s powers evolving to meet the challenge in front of her. The series is throwing a lot of change at Carol Danvers, and by proxy the readers, right off the jump; however, this is enabled by writer Alyssa Wong’s fundamental understanding of what makes Captain Marvel work as a character, meaning the series will continue to do the core things that have made Captain Marvel one of the greatest heroes in contemporary comics.
Captain Marvel #1 will be available October 25, 2023 from Marvel Comics.
