There hasn’t been any direct news on The Boys season 4 since the conclusion of the spinoff series Gen V on November 2, 2023. However, the final episode of Gen V had some big reveals for the next season of The Boys. The mid-credits scene especially has created a huge amount of conversation online as it has a lot of implications for The Boys season 4 plot. In the scene, Billy Butcher arrives to look around what remains of The Woods facility. This could be a huge reveal for The Boys season 4, as it may mean Butcher knows about the supe-killing virus being developed there. Until there’s an update from Amazon MGM studios or the cast or creative team of The Boys to provide some clarity on the season 4 story, however, how much Butcher knows about The Woods and God U remains a mystery.

The Boys Is Officially Returning To Amazon Prime Video

The Boys is renewed for season 4, as was confirmed by Amazon in June 2022 a week after the season 3 premiere. Eric Kripke returns as showrunner, and the fourth season of The Boys will have 8 episodes just like prior seasons. Kripke has already teased the title of the season 4 finale, which will be called “Assassination Run”, and he’ll also be directing the episode. Like all prior seasons, The Boys season 4 will be an Amazon Prime Video exclusive.

When Is The Boys Season 4 Coming Out?

Amazon Prime Video has not officially announced when The Boys season 4 release date will be, but it’s widely expected to be arriving in 2024 despite the imapct of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. It was confirmed in June 2023 that The Boys season 4 was delayed indefinitely until the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike ends. This was announced by The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke who shared the news on his Twitter page. Some fans were surprised by its delay as filming had already been completed.

Kripke explained on Twitter a good deal of writing happens after filming has wrapped, as dialogue is added to help clarify points and bridge gaps in the story. While the SAG-AFTRA strikes are still ongoing, the WGA and AMPTP managed to reach a tentative agreement in September 2023, ending the writer’s strike. It’s unknown if work has resumed yet, but once it does a release date for The Boys season 4 could be shortly announced by Amazon Prime Video.

Who Is Returning In The Next Season Of The Boys?

The Boys season 4 cast contains many returning faces from seasons 1-3. The core cast of The Boys season 4 is once more built around the quartet of Karl Urban’s Butcher, Jack Quaid’s Hughie, Erin Moriarty’s Starlight, and Anthony Starr’s Homelander. Jensen Ackles previously teased his potential return as Soldier Boy in The Boys season 4 too. It should also be expected that the following cast members will be returning for the next season of The Boys:

Additionally, despite the character dying in season 3, Nathan Mitchell is also confirmed to be returning to play a new version of Black Noir in The Boys season 4.

Two new Supes have also been officially added to the mix for The Boys season 4 cast. Sister Sage, who will be played by Susan Heyward (Orange is the New Black), and Firecracker, who will be portrayed by Valorie Curry (The Lost Symbol). Rosemarie DeWitt (La La Land) has been confirmed to appear in The Boys season 4 as Hughie’s long-lost mother, and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) will also return as Hughie’s father. Rob Benedict (Supernatural), Elliot Knight (Titans), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) have been officially cast in undisclosed roles.

How Gen V Sets Up The Boys Season 4

The Spinoff Teased Multiple Plot Points For The Next Season Of The Boys

The spinoff series Gen V arrived on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, concluding in November. Plenty of possible plot points in The Boys season 4 were teased throughout Gen V, especially in the finale. In the final episode of Gen V season 1 Homelander arrived, and appears to be responsible for Marie and several other Gen V characters being trapped in a Vought facility. The fact that Homelander is so directly involved in the events at Godolkin University was a big reveal, and the God U massacre in the season 1 finale could be a catalyst for events and sentiment toward Supes in The Boys season 4.

Additionally, Victoria Neuman was revealed to have been instrumental in Marie getting into Godolkin. The two have a lot in common, as they share both powers and a childhood at the Red River institute. Neuman has been set up as a major future antagonist in The Boys, though whose side she’s on and what her true goals are remains unclear. However, if she has a vested interest in Marie then Homelander imprisoning Jaz Sinclair’s Gen V character could put Neuman and Homelander at odds. It’s possible that Marie could cameo in The Boys season 4 too if Victoria Neuman doesn’t want her in Vought’s hands.

What Will Happen When The Boys Returns On Amazon Prime Video?

Based on the season 3 finale, The Boys season 4 story details become quite clear. Neuman’s path to becoming Vice President of the United States has made her The Boys’ new top target. Starlight will be working with the team full-time after leaving Vought, while Butcher has 12–18 months to live due to his use of Temp-V. Homelander is also set to become even more dangerous after the public favorably responds to him killing a Starlight fan, while he will also help raise Ryan and work to find new members of The Seven after Black Noir’s death, Maeve’s presumed death, and Starlight’s exit.

Black Noir will seemingly play an intriguing role in the new season as well despite the original character being killed. His storyline was teased with a tweet from the Vought Industries Twitter account calling Black Noir’s death a hoax. With it confirmed that Black Noir did indeed die, it appears Vought will attempt to cover this up in some way. This could introduce the cloning aspect of the character which plays a big role in the climax of the story.

While there’s no official The Boys season 4 plot synopsis available for obvious reasons, it seems as though The Boys season 4 narrative will continue to push the envelope with its storytelling. Anthony Starr recently teased a scene in The Boys season 4 which was a particularly memorable sequence and one he called “the most bizarre thing I’ve ever done.” The end of The Boys season 3 hinted that Homelander would be even more unhinged in his behavior and Starr’s comments on what’s to come in The Boys season 4 certainly seem to back that up.
