With Netflix Geeked now underway, and in celebration of “Stranger Things Day,” the writer’s room behind the fifth and final season of Stranger Things has taken to social media to share a tease of the first scene of the first episode. You can check out the image shared of the script for Stranger Things season five, episode one below, “Chapter One: The Crawl,” which reads “DARKNESS. The sound of COLD WIND. GROANING TREES. And… A CHILD’S VOICE. Singing a familiar song:”

What that “familiar song” may be remains to be seen, but no doubt Stranger Things fans will have their theories. While much of the detail surrounding Stranger Things season five are a mystery, co-creator Matt Duffer has teased that the series will “be going 100 miles” from the start.

“Season 5 is going to start pedal to the metal. We’re not going to do the ramp-up. There’s no time. There’s no normalcy, obviously, once you’ve reached the end of four. It’s not like there’s going to be time to explore our characters’ love life, and how is Steve’s dating going? There’s going to be none of that, it’s just going to be going 100 miles an hour from the beginning.”

It’s been well over a year since the fourth season of Stranger Things debuted, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the Netflix series’ concluding season. Like many other shows, production has been delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Now that the writers’ strike has finished, the series moves forward as the writers’ room resumes their work on the anticipated fifth season. In a recent conversation with The Wrap, producer and director Shawn Levy shared that the Duffer brothers (the show’s creators) have been “hard at work” since the writer’s strike concluded on September 27:

“I can say that we are hoping to start filming as soon as possible. We really need the actors’ strike resolved first. The Duffers have been hard at work since the writer strike ended. We’re busy on a bunch of fronts because we also have our Stranger Things play opening in London imminently. It’s fabulous. It’s f***ing awesome. We are raring to go – our cast, our crew. Everyone not only needs to get back to work because we have many hundreds of crew members who have not been able to make a living since the strikes began, but we will be shooting very shortly after the actors’ strike ends.”

Following further negotiations, the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA has so far failed to reach a resolution, with both releasing statements regarding the hardships they’re facing. SAG-AFTRA claims the AMPTP is refusing to protect performers from being replaced by AI and increasing wages. The AMPTP states that SAG-AFTRA’s demands would cause an “untenable economic burden.”

What Audiences Can Expect From Stranger Things’ Final Season

Netflix

As ready as Stranger Things fans are to see the sci-fi series back on the streamer, one of the show’s young actors is anxious to move forward for another reason. During a recent interview, Millie Bobby Brown, who portrayed Eleven for the show’s entirety, revealed:

“When you’re ready, you’re like, ‘All right, let’s do this. Let’s tackle this last senior year. Let’s get out of here. Stranger Things takes up a lot of time to film and it’s preventing me from creating stories that I’m passionate about. So I’m ready to say, ‘Thank you and goodbye.'”

The fourth season of Stranger Things (which also faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic) finished with Vecna unleashing the Upside Down on the town of Hawkins. Just last month, Levy shared that the bar is set high for the next installment:

“There’s no way to be contiguous with Season 4, and not, frankly, expand scale and depth,” Levy said. “It’s major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series. ‘Stranger Things 5’ is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see.”

Stranger Things premiered on Netflix in 2016 and quickly gained a massive following and critical praise. The final chapter is expected to bring back most of the show’s cast, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Priah Ferguson, Joe Keery, and Maya Hawke.
