Pilot dies after ‘experimental homebuilt’ plane crashes in California | US News

The pilot of a “homebuilt” plane has died after the aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from an airport in California.

The single-engine plane crashed on a street near Corona Municipal Airport just before midday on Saturday, local authorities said.

It was described by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as a Vans RV-8 “experimental homebuilt” aircraft.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement: “A general aviation aircraft crashed shortly after departure from Corona Municipal Airport in California.

“Only the pilot was on board. The type of aircraft is unknown at this time.”

The crash caused a vegetation fire, which fire crews were able to put out quickly, the Corona Fire Department said.

It was the fire that first drew attention to the plane crash.

Footage of the aftermath shared by NBC Los Angeles shows wreckage less than a mile from the airport.

The victim has not yet been identified and the cause of the crash is under investigation by both the NTSB and the FAA.

There has not been any information shared about what caused the incident.
