Summary
- Saw XI is the next film in the horror franchise, set to be released on September 27, 2024.
- The plot and details of the movie are currently unknown, but franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman suggests sticking to what the fans want.
- Saw X’s success and positive reception from fans played a role in the decision to make another film in the series.
Serving as a prequel to the second film, Saw X was met with massive box office success following its theatrical release on September 29, 2023. Although it took seven years to resume production after Saw: The Final Chapter, the horror franchise has taken on new life in recent times. Whether films such as Jigsaw and Spiral: From the Book of Saw hold a candle to the original installments is a point of contention among movie-goers, but there’s no denying that Saw X was a hit with long-time fans.
On December 11, 2023, the official Saw Instagram account created a post confirming that Lionsgate would be moving forward with an eleventh movie. However, the announcement came as no surprise to the franchise’s former director. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Spiral) predicted there would be another film after the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Saw X. Read the full quote below:
Darren Lynn Bousman: I think going back to what the fans respond to was the smart move. I’m excited just like everyone else to see what they do next. I’m positive there will be a next. I’m excited just like you are to see what that is.
What We Know About Saw XI
Lionsgate has already set a release date for Saw XI, with the film anticipated to hit theaters on September 27, 2024. While discussing his new supernatural horror, The Cello, with Screen Rant, Bousman called Saw X a “love letter” due to its inclusion of fan-favorite elements. This presents the question of whether filmmakers will continue to build on the recent film’s success or take the franchise in a new direction.
Very little is known about the plot of the upcoming installment, but Saw X writer Josh Stolberg confirmed that neither he nor co-writer Peter Goldfinger will be involved.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kevin Greutert admits that he wanted Saw X to feel like a “final send-off” for Jigsaw. Given Greutert’s statement, there’s reason to doubt that the next film will be as heavily centered around Tobin Bell’s character.
Alternatively, Saw X‘s post-credits scene opens the door for a different type of prequel. Costas Mandylor’s Detective Hoffman is seen torturing Henry Kessler, which indicates that Kramer’s successor could return in future movies. Regardless of when Saw XI takes place, it’s not uncommon for deceased characters to appear through flashbacks and recordings. However, until the cast is officially confirmed, not much can be deduced about the film’s plot and place in the timeline.
Saw 11
Saw XI is the eleventh entry in the long-running horror-mystery franchise, which centers on the legacy of the serial killer known as Jigsaw. It was announced shortly after Saw X’s box-office run. Minimal details on the film exist other than Lionsgate confirming the franchise will continue and return in 2024.
