The rumored Indiana Jones TV show is very quickly becoming another Obi-Wan Kenobi at Lucasfilm, as it seems Kathleen Kennedy cannot seem to decide whether it will or won’t be happening. Very similar to comments made about the possibility of another outing for Ewan McGregor’s Jedi in the Star Wars franchise, the Lucasfilm boss has now further murkied the waters in regards to the future of Indiana Jones on the small screen.
With Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bringing Harrison Ford’s time as the intrepid adventurer to a close this summer, there has been an often asked question of what that means to for the Indy franchise. The responses have ranged massively from there being other possible routes to be explored to that there will never be a reboot or another Indiana Jones project as Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones and that is that. But in her latest conversation on the subject, during the Dagobah Dispatch podcast for Entertainment Weekly, Kennedy managed to contradict the last stance on the matter of what happens after the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. When once again confirming Ford’s last appearance, Kennedy said:
“It’s [Harrison Ford’s] last entry. That’s how we look at the Indy franchise. I mean, truthfully, right now, if we were to do anything, it might be in series television down the road, but we’re not doing anything to replace Indiana Jones. This is it. There are five movies that Harrison Ford did. And Harrison is so specific and so unique to creating this role. We just, Steven [Spielberg] agrees, we just wouldn’t do that.”
So they are not replacing Indiana Jones and will not be replacing Harrison Ford, but may be doing a TV series sometime in future, which suggests that at some point they would be also doing both of these. Clear, right?
Does Not Shutting Down Indiana Jones TV Show Rumors Just Mean It Will Happen?
Well that seems to be the question, and also a running theme of Lucasfilm right now. We are not planning it now, or doing it now, but possibly in future we might and we don’t want to completely put the idea to rest. Having said something identical about Ewan McGregor’s potential future return in another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it is a great sign of how uncertain the future at even the big studios is.
It was only last year that Kennedy addressed the possibility of replacing Harrison Ford in a direct comparison with Star Wars: Solo, a prequel which saw Alden Ehrenreich take over Harrison Ford’s role as Han Solo to the obvious wave of comparison and critique. At the time, Kennedy said:
“Some people have talked about how, well, maybe Solo[: A Star Wars Story] should have been a TV show. But even doing Solo as a TV show without Harrison Ford as Han Solo… it’s the same thinking. Maybe I should have recognized this before. We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn’t a day I wasn’t on set where I wasn’t like, ‘Yes — this is Indiana Jones.'”
Whether Lucasfilm will dip back into the Indiana Jones franchise again in future is something fans can only apparently wait and find out if and when it happens.
