James Gunn Says Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Members Will Be in Superman: Legacy

While James Gunn is saying farewell to Marvel Studios and the Guardians of the Galaxy with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that doesn’t mean he won’t be seeing the same cast members. At least one of the Guardians of the Galaxy team will be a part of the filmmaker’s next big movie project, Superman: Legacy. While answering some fan questions on Twitter, Gunn responded to one person who bluntly asked if “any cast member for [Guardians of the Galaxy]” would be part of the Superman: Legacy cast. His answer made it clear that this would be happening.

“Yes,” Gunn bluntly replied.

Of course, the short answer will lead us to wonder which cast member(s) Gunn could be referring to, but it sounds like it’s a sure thing that may have been already sorted out with the person or persons he has in mind. It obviously doesn’t seem likely that any of the cast members will be playing Clark Kent, as Gunn has said he’s looking for someone significantly younger than Henry Cavill for the role. But there are certainly many other roles in that world that would be appropriate for the Guardians of the Galaxy team, and it seems worth noting that Dave Bautista has campaigned for the role of Lex Luthor.

“As soon as I saw that picture of myself next to Lex Luthor I was like, ‘Man, that’s really interesting,'” Bautista told ComicBook.com, referring to a social media post of himself alongside the supervillain. “It’s interesting to me. I’d be totally up for that, James Gunn.”

James Gunn Wraps Up the Guardians of the Galaxy Story

Marvel Studios

We’ll have to wait and see what happens with Superman: Legacy, but this is just the start of a new era with the DCU. Meanwhile, Gunn is ending another era with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film marks his final Marvel Studios movie, given how Gunn’s focus moving forward will be on fleshing out his DCU with Peter Safran. It’s been emotional for Gunn to say goodbye to the Guardians of the Galaxy characters, though he also says he wouldn’t mind if they were to continue on in the MCU without him.

“It would absolutely not be disloyal of them to me to continue on in the Marvel Universe,” Gunn recently told Empire. “I would love to see any characters that remain [at the end of the film] get solo movies, or join the Avengers, or a new version of the Guardians, or whatever.”

Even so, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana have already said that they’re done with those roles following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But Chris Pratt has also teased that he’d be up for returning as Star-Lord in the future of the MCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in movie theaters, while Superman: Legacy is set to hit the big screen on July 11, 2025.
