We’re a week away from the premiere of Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners, and its newly unveiled Rotten Tomatoes’ score points to the Michael B. Jordan vampire flick as being one that you should definitely buy a ticket to. Jordan stars in the period horror piece as brothers Smoke and Stack, two twins who are trying to leave their troubled lives behind. When they return to their hometown to start anew, they discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
Debuting with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman says Sinners “brilliantly illustrates Black life in the violent and poverty-stricken Jim Crow-segregated South while portraying a vibrant cultural landscape brimming with musical fellowship. Toss a ruthless vampire antagonist into the mix and the result is a must-see blockbuster that will blow audiences out of their chairs.” Eric Goldman from IGN Movies adds:
“Ryan Coogler enters the horror realm and nails it in Sinners, which drops vampires into a deeply personal, heartfelt, emotional, sexy, and bloody story that’ll stick with you.”
Other reviews, such as the one by BJ Colangelo from Fangoria, also heap praise upon Coogler’s direction. “Sinners is currently Coogler’s magnum opus, and I can’t help but think he’s only just getting started.” Richard Lawson from Vanity Fair called Sinners “propulsive and stirring entertainment, messy but always compelling,” adding:
“The film’s fascinating array of genres and tropes and ideas swirls together in a way that is, I suppose, singularly American.”
More to come…
