Craig Conover Reveals Southern Charm Producers ‘Tell A Story’

Here’s what goes on behind the scenes. Craig Conover shared how Southern Charm producers orchestrate a little drama within the cast. Sure, we figured it’s not a hands-off approach, but it’s interesting to know exactly how much or little the topics of conversation are tinkered with.

It’s an interesting avenue of discussion that the Sewing Down South founder hasn’t brushed upon prior. But surely someone who’s been a reality TV star as long as Craig has is certainly equipped to make such comments.

Craig praises producers that help “motivate stuff”

“I call it structured improv,” Craig answered when asked to describe how producers work on the show.

“I think the best example, and if they got mad at me for this, they shouldn’t because it’s true, their job is to help tell a story, and so if we were filming a scene from Southern Charm and we’re in the middle of a season and the three of us go to dinner and we talk about that one time we did a podcast together in New York, it’s a waste of time,” Craig explained on the Good Guys podcast.

Instead, topics of conversation are suggested to the cast if they aren’t having a dramatic enough conversation. That way, at least the cast can accuse each other of talking about each other behind backs.

“We can talk about that but we also have to address the big fight at the party last week and we have to address the affair that’s happening between our two friends,” Craig said.

“Now, however, you answer that and whatever your thoughts may be are going to be completely genuine and 100 percent,” he added. “So there’s some motivation. Like, a good producer will help motivate stuff and that’s just because of the efficiency of time. If you’re not doing a surveillance show, you don’t have the cameras all day.”

For example, producers intervened when Shep Rose was reluctant to discuss his new relationship in Southern Charm Season 2.

“He didn’t really want to talk about his past. And so … a producer might slide into Shep and be like, ‘Hey man, we really think you should open up about your dating history,’ and explain why that’s important,” Craig revealed.

The Pillows and Beer podcast co-host reiterated that the cast functions relatively organically. However, there is much that he still cannot share. Fans will have to wait for those “war stories” and “behind-the-scenes” drama.
