Vin Diesel Addresses Bringing Dwayne Johnson Back Into the Fast & Furious Family

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains SPOILERS for Fast X

Fast and Furious lead Vin Diesel has commented on one of the more surprising cameo appearances in the latest outing, Fast X. Speaking with ET, Diesel comments directly on the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Luke Hobbs, a comeback that was never expected to happen following the pair’s much-publicized feud. Check out what Diesel had to say below…

“We have such a great cast. We lead with love. We try to create an environment where people can do their best work. That’s all actors really want, is to feel as though they’re supported to create unique characters. Characters that last forever … and you see that in this franchise.”

Okay so maybe it’s not as directly as you might think, with Diesel not mentioning Johnson by name, but the actor does seem to be putting his arms out and offering a warm embrace of his fellow action star, mentioning love, support, and the “great cast.”

Johnson’s unstoppable agent Luke Hobbs returns to the franchise in a mid-credits scene at the end of Fast X, with the character being dragged into the ongoing vendetta of Jason Momoa’s villain. While the return of Hobbs was spoiled a week before the wide release of the sequel, it came as no less of a surprise, with Johnson and Diesel’s rocky relationship having become public knowledge back in 2016.

How well things have been smoothed over remains to be seen, as Diesel and Johnson share no scenes together in Fast X, but it will be interesting to see Hobbs brought back into the fray and whether the real-life clash is now over.

Vin Diesel Working on Fast & Furious Spinoffs, Will One of Them Be Hobbs & Shaw 2?

Universal Pictures

While the main Fast and Furious series is set to come to an end with Fast X, Fast 11, and Fast 12, the franchise is not slowing down. Vin Diesel has teased several spinoffs, including a female-centric one, with many wondering if this will lead to a sequel to Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. “I started developing the female spinoff… in 2017 with other spinoffs,” Diesel said recently. “The sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the projects. Look how many characters and great talent there is in the movie… These characters are appealing and we need to see more of them.”

Fast X launches the final chapters of one of cinema’s most storied and popular global franchises. Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: Dante, the son of Fast Five’s drug kingpin Hernan Reyes. Spending the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price, Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged, and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

Starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa, and Charlize Theron, Fast X is in theaters now.
