Director Matthew Vaughn has further teased development on a third Kick-Ass movie, describing his approach as “very, very meta” and revealing that the next movie in the franchise will be part of a new trilogy. Speaking with Collider, Vaughn confirmed that the script for Kick-Ass 3 is currently being written and will be the filmmaker’s attempt to once again reinvent the “R-rated superhero” much like he did with the first movie back in 2010.
“We’re halfway through it. There’s a very, very dare I say it… and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta universe. It is what, you know, ‘Kick Ass’ was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing ‘Kick Ass,’ which couldn’t be more ‘Kick Ass.’”
So where does the “meta” stuff come into it? Well, Vaughn offered more details regarding this new trilogy that Kick-Ass 3 will be a part of, telling Collider that it will, in fact, be the third entry in a series that starts with a movie called School Fight.
“The trilogy will be School Fight, this movie, let’s call it Vram for the time being, and then Kick-Ass, and they’re all connected.”
For those unaware, School Fight has already been filmed and finished, with Vaughn working alongside stunt coordinator-turned-director Damien Walters (Kingsman: The Secret Service). As for the mysterious Vram, that is currently being filmed. Asked if he wanted to have all three installments in this trilogy finished before releasing any of them, Vaughn replied…
“No. So, when this (VRAM) is finished, I think this will launch, I’ll be conservative on this, if we’re lucky, Toronto, if we’re not lucky, Sundance. Well, this year, next year, if you know what I mean.”

- Once you know the secret don’t let the cat out of the bag.
The first Kick-Ass is based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., and follows ordinary teenager, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who longs to become a superhero just like the ones he spends all his time reading about. Buying a costume, he goes out into the night to fight crime, only to find out it’s a lot more difficult than he expected.
Kick-Ass has since gained a passionate following and opened the doors to R-rated superhero fare such as Deadpool. A sequel written and directed by Jeff Wadlow, Kick-Ass 2, was released in 2013 but sadly failed to reach anywhere near the same heights as its predecessor.
For now, fans can only speculate how exactly Vaughn plans to reintroduce the world of Kick-Ass as part of his School Fight trilogy, but it will certainly be interesting to watch unfold.
Matthew Vaughn’s next venture, Argylle, is due to land in theaters next month, and follows an introverted spy novelist who is drawn into real-life espionage when her stories start to reflect the activities of a sinister underground syndicate.
Starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson, Argylle is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 2, 2024. Check out the trailer below.
