Ryan Reynolds is never short of a few celebrity friends to call on when he needs them, and a new Super Bowl ad created by the Deadpool star’s Maximum Effort is proof of that. The ad for STōK Cold Brew Coffee, their first ever Super Bowl venture, features none other than Anthony Hopkins, who is seen suiting up as Wrex the Dragon, the mascot of Welsh football team Wrexham AFC, which is co-owned by Reynolds.
Despite being one of the world’s most renowned actors, Hopkins is always up for a laugh – as he has proven many times in the past few years since joining TikTok. Although he plays it straight for much of the ad, the moment he grabs the head of the mascot and slams it on, before the camera cuts to footage of the mascot out on the pitch under the assumption Hopkins IS the team’s mascot, is just a great bit of fun. You can check out Reynolds’ post on Instagram below sharing the ad.
The advertisement, conceived by Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort in collaboration with Danone’s Harvest Creative, aims to spotlight Wrexham AFC and its journey towards Premier League ambition. The choice of Hopkins for the role of the team’s mascot not only adds a touch of Welsh authenticity, but is a great insight into the Oscar-winner’s willingness to take on any role. The decision to feature Hopkins in this role was praised by Reynolds and co-owner Rob McElhenney, who humorously acknowledged the actor’s ‘surprisingly acrobatic’ performance as crucial to Wrexham’s success.

What’s Next For Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Reynolds?
At the age of 86, many people would just be looking to kick back and take it easy, but that isn’t Anthony Hopkins. Having worked consistently across seven decades, the last few years have seen the iconic star appearing several new movies, including The Father, which won Hopkins his second Best Actor Academy Award, The Son and Zack Snyder’s epic Netflix movie Rebel Moon. As well as appearing in the second part of that movie, Hopkins also stars in next month’s One Life, and portrays Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Last Session.
As for Reynolds, this year marks the arrival of Marvel’s Deadpool to the MCU, with the actor reprising his titular role in what is the most anticipated movie of 2024. Deadpool 3 was never going to be a movie that arrived without fanfare, and with the first teaser expected to land during this year’s Super Bowl, it is about to start off a very noisy promotional campaign leading up to its release in July. However, before that, Reynolds will head up the all-star cast of the John Krasinski-directed fantasy movie IF – a movie with a title destined to be the bane of Google searches everywhere – which is released in cinemas on May 17.
