Kevin Smith Shares His Shocked Reaction to Masters of the Universe Reviews

Summary

  • Masters of the Universe: Revolution surprised fans with a more positive Rotten Tomatoes score compared to its predecessor.
  • Showrunner Kevin Smith was unprepared for the wave of positivity and thanked fans for their support.
  • Revolution learned from past criticism and brought He-Man back as the focus, resulting in better reviews and viewer ratings.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution surprised many fans by countering the very mixed reaction to its predecessor, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, with a much more positive Rotten Tomatoes score. It seems that no one was more surprised by this than the series’ showrunner, Kevin Smith.

Revolution picks the new adventure of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe from where Revelation ended, with a technologically advanced Skeletor, under the guidance of Hordak, attempting once again to take over Eternia. Although the previous season was heavily criticized by fans for side-lining its main hero for much of its ten episodes, Revolution learned from that mistake very quickly, with Smith reinstating He-Man as the focus of the bulk of the five-episode story.

Speaking on the latest episode of his Fatman Beyond podcast, Smith shared his “unprepared” reaction to the wave of positivity – which includes a 100% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes – and thanked those who have taken the time to watch the show. He said:

“To say that I was unprepared for the reaction that we’ve gotten for this season is an understatement. It’s a love fest. People absolutely are saying the nicest things they’ve ever said about my work. Right now, that series has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Go look at every other Kevin Smith project, see if you can find one of those. We opened in the top 10 at number six. I think today we’re at like number nine, but it’s staying alive and thriving and the fans are saying such lovely things.

It feels really good when you hear from people who were like, ‘I did not like what you did last time. I thought you broke it, and boy did you guys fix it and stick the landing.’ I was just prepared for like, ‘Well here it comes again, it’s going to be like last time and people are going to be mad at me.’ Not at all and they saw how much love and effort that we put into it. So thank you everybody who’s watching the show.”

Netflix is not exactly forgiving when a series does not live up to expectation. Having already abandoned a potential live-action Masters of the Universe movie, there is now a question mark hanging over the future of Smith’s animated venture.

Although Revelation did not really get the reaction Smith hoped for in its reviews, the viewing figures were strong enough for him to get the chance of redemption with Revolution. Clocking in with just five episodes, the new series’ shorter length forced Smith to condense the story into a much tighter and faster-paced offering that has massively improved its ratings. Whether it has done enough in terms of viewership to secure a further renewal is something that we will find out in the coming weeks.

You can watch the entire Masters of the Universe revival on Netflix.
