is a movie that seemed destined to drop into a vat of toxic waste and never be seen again. Now, though, the reboot of the classic Troma schlockfest is heading into cinemas this August, and although we have already seen two short trailers for the film, a new look at star Peter Dinklage
as the titular character has given fans yet another look at the new version of Toxie, who will be swinging his mop in bloody sweeps this summer.
The Toxic Avenger is a remake of the 1984 low-budget horror classic, in which a mild-mannered and bullied janitor ends up being dumped in a barrel of toxic waste, only to be transformed into a hideously deformed, vengeful anti-hero who sets out to extract bloody revenge on those who have done him wrong. It is believed that the new version, directed by Macon Blair, will not deviate too far from the original movie’s plot, but this time around it is bringing with it an incredible cast.

The Toxic Avenger Review: The Punk Rock Superhero Delivers Guts, Gore, and Heart
The Toxic Avenger is a great update to a cult classic that delivers a must-watch audience experience and a superhero designed for outcasts.
Alongside Dinklage as Winston Gooze/The Toxic Avenger, the film also stars Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, and Julia Davis. First reviews of the movie, taken from its original premiere back in 2023, landed the film an unexpected 92%, which begged the question of why no one wanted to distribute the film, leaving it languishing in limbo for two years. Now, however, the film will be released, and fans really cannot wait to see it.
What Do Early Reviews Say About ‘The Toxic Avenger’?
When The Toxic Avenger received its premiere in September 2023, critics were caught off-guard by the movie, with many expecting very little and receiving what is widely perceived to be a crazy, gory, and “completely unhinged” movie that makes Lloyd Kaufman’s original movie look sanitized in comparison. Two reviews paint an epic picture of what’s to come from the new version of Toxie.
“If 1987 Paul Verhoeven made a Troma movie instead of ROBOCOP, you might get something like Macon Blair’s THE TOXIC AVENGER.” – Phil Nobile Jr.
“There’s a whole lot of “Huh, I’ve never seen anyone explode quite like THAT before” in this extremely goofy, utterly self aware remake. Also, there is no scenery left in the entire world because Kevin Bacon has now eaten it all.” – Tasha Robinson
Even newer reviews have continued to heap praise on the film, with Discussing Film’s James Preston Poole commenting:
“Completely discarding an expectation for a more sanitized take on the character, Blair’s new vision for The Toxic Avenger is an unhinged off-color extravaganza just about guaranteed to divide audiences.”
That is probably the best review for a movie like The Toxic Avenger, as those who love Troma movies will be fully on board with the film, while those who have been disgusted by the recent success of movies like Terrifier 3 and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey will want nothing more than to see the movie burned to the ground.
