Tom Suozzi knows the score when it comes to Joe Biden and his party: “The Democratic brand is in trouble here, and we have to do a lot to overcome that,” he told CNN after the prez visited the city without showing up in the Queens and Long Island district Suozzi’s fighting for.
Dead right: The last thing he needs voters thinking about is what they’ll empower by choosing him over Mazi Pilip, a stellar GOP newcomer with an amazing biography.
Suozzi’s brand is “common sense Democrat,” but he voted 100% with Biden when he last held that House seat, which didn’t show much common sense.
Which leaves him in a tight race now in what would normally be an easy Democratic pickup after the implosion and expulsion of George Santos.
Look at the latest polling numbers, from Siena, for NY-03: Pilip — whom we heartily endorse — is at 44% to Suozzi’s 48% among likely voters, a gap within the poll’s margin of error. (A PIX11/Emerson College survey late Wednesday found the race just as tight.)
In other words, it’s a statistical dead heat, despite Suozzi’s name recognition from years of holding office in Nassau.
A Dem win here would narrow the GOP’s already razor-thin House majority, empowering a party committed to bad and dangerous ideas.
For that, Democrats have only themselves to blame.
Siena poll crosstabs reveal that the issues driving Pilip’s run are migrants and crime.
On both, national Dems have staked out far-left positions — and Pilip is ahead.
(She also leads slightly on Israel’s war with Hamas, where national Dems are deeply divided with antisemitic conspiracy theorists like Rep. Rashida Tlaib pushing the prez to bully the Jewish state into giving up on eliminating Hamas and agreeing to a Palestinian state.)
Biden, Homeland Security head Alejandro Mayorkas and their congressional enablers have effectively opened our border, with millions pouring in since Day 1 of the administration — an influx that’s set only to continue and worsen.
On crime, ultraleft Dem reps like New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman want to stop building jails, defund cops and in general let criminals prey on the law-abiding. .
Why Dems have signed onto these policies, which hurt both their voters and the national interests of the United States, is another ugly story.
But they have, with Biden’s ample blessing.
He looks set to pay a severe price come November.
Suozzi may well be making a down payment on that once the NY-03 special ends.
