Deckhand Johnny Arvanitis and Bosun Wihan Du Toit both got fired in one fell swoop on Below Deck Down Under season 3, but is Johnny really worse than his problematic boss? Captain Jason Chambers’ shed his villain edit by sticking to his guns and firing both of them, despite the increased workload for the remaining deckhands, Harry Van Vilet and Adair Werley. However, he was able to quickly hire Bosun Nate Salmon and Deckhand Nicolas Cattelan. While it all worked out in the end, I think it’s important to remember who the real villain was here.
I’m all about the drama, but on Below Deck Down Under season 3, it’s been nearly constant. Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph was excited to have a Sous Chef in the galley, but Anthony Bird turned out to be a terrible choice, ultimately leading to his firing. Meanwhile, Wihan started pursuing basically every woman onboard the Katina, beginning with a drunken kiss from Chef Tzarina and culminating in a tepid date with Adair. Even after Wihan’s firing, Chef Tzarina and Chief Stew Lara Rigby appear ready to go to war over differing service standards. But who was worse– Johnny or Wihan?
Johnny Got The Boot After Punching A Wall
It Was A Scary Reaction
Below Deck Down Under season 3 delivered one of its most explosive moments when Johnny lost his cool and punched a wall after a night out. I’m glad that the outburst that ultimately led to his dismissal because violence (even towards a wall rather than a person) could be a red flag for abuse in the future. New Sous Chef Alesia Harris, who was engaged in a boatmance with Johnny, mistakenly entered Johnny and Wihan’s cabin and got into bed with Wihan, believing him to be Johnny.

Alesia claimed she thought it was Johnny’s bunk, which I think seemed pretty believable given the hidden camera footage of the incident. Unfortunately, the sight of her in bed with Wihan sent Johnny into a jealous spiral. Unable to contain his emotions, Johnny reacted by punching the wall and loudly announcing that he was done with the boat.

Though he quickly left the vessel for the night, Captain Jason knew he had to consider the safety of the entire crew. I’m guessing the attempted sexual assault involving Luke Jones in Below Deck Down Under season 2 was still fresh in his mind. Captain Jason, while acknowledging Johnny’s strong work ethic, made the difficult decision to fire him. I agree with him that aggressive behavior can never be tolerated.
Wihan Is No Angel
He Absolutely Needed To Go
It’s truly maddening that Wihan’s bad behavior ended up triggering Johnny, leading to both of their firings. Wihan was definitely no angel aboard the Katina. From botched leadership to multiple boundary-crossing flirtations, Wihan’s stint as Bosun was doomed from the start. Though he initially appeared competent, Wihan’s approach to leadership made him a liability. His communication with the deck team was terrible, eventually making Deckhand Harry burst into tears, frustrated with his incompetency.
Captain Jason was right to exert his power as the Katina’s leader and fire Wihan. His presence was the root of multiple problems onboard.
Remember the jetski incident? It capsized with a guest who couldn’t swim. The dangerous incident could have easily been avoided had Wihan taken his team’s concerns seriously, and it was a major red flag. But it wasn’t just his professional missteps that sealed his fate. Wihan was also way more concerned with hooking up than managing his deck crew. He kissed Chef Tzarina, went on a date with Marina Marcondes de Barros, wrote a love letter to Adair, and even tried to cross a line with Alesia. Captain Jason was right when he referred to Wihan’s presence as an “infection.“
Which Reality Star Is The Bigger Villain?
Wihan Was Worse Than Johnny
Johnny punched a wall in a moment of drunken rage. That’s a red flag that shouldn’t be tolerated aboard a yacht or anywhere else. However, Wihan is, without a doubt, way worse than Johnny. Johnny was willing to immediately reflect on his actions and acknowledge his wrongdoings. He didn’t try to argue with Captain Jason or make excuses. What I saw was a man who thoroughly regretted his actions and took accountability. I’m sad to see him go.
Captain Jason made the right choice by firing both Johnny and Wihan, but their transgressions were not equal.
While Wihan didn’t try to fight with Captain Jason, he obviously didn’t think he should have been fired and tried to save face. Captain Jason hit the nail on the head when he said that Wihan was an infection spreading through the boat and needed to be nipped in the bud. I sincerely hope that Wihan is able to watch the season back and see where he went wrong so he can improve in the future. Below Deck Down Under season 3 will be better without him.
Below Deck Down Under season 3 airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.
