“If you’ve got the time, we’ve got the crime!” So goes a logline for the new series Statute of Limitations, which has the particularly ingenious idea of collecting tell-all interviews from criminals after the statute of limitations for their crimes has passed. Hosted by American television personality and actor Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino (Jersey Shore, The Sorrentinos), Statute of Limitations is unique in the true crime landscape, merging reality television and crime docuseries with a hefty dose of levity. You can check out the trailer above, and the synopsis below:
“The lighthearted 10-episode show from FilmRise and Grinning Dog Entertainment explores non-violent crimes as told by the real, everyday people who committed them. How can they admit their wrongdoing on camera? Their statute of limitations has passed, so they can’t be convicted. Therefore, no blurred faces or voice changers are necessary. Statute of Limitations
will be available to stream beginning February 1 on major platforms including Tubi, YouTube, The Roku Channel, FilmRise streaming apps and more.”
The press release for Statute of Limitations details the legality behind the series and how the show will incorporate its titular legal framework:
“In the United States, there are laws in place called statutes of limitations that set time limits where citizens cannot be charged for committing crimes one a specific window has passed. These laws protect defendants from unfair persecution or legal action. Each episode of Statute of Limitations features two stories presented by Sorrentino with his trademark wit and banter. The original new series will scratch the “whodunit” itch that many true crime fans have. Not only will viewers get to met the perpetrators – otherwise average people from all walks of life – but they will also get to hear exactly why they committed their crimes.”
Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino Hosts Criminals Without Consequences
Sorrentino is actually a clever choice for the host of a series like this. He’s unpretentious and relatable to many people, and certainly affable, exactly the kind of person who people could tell their embarassing (and criminal) stories to without a great fear of judgment or ethical condescension. For his part, ‘The Situation’ seems excited to deliver the series to the masses, saying:
Statue of Limitations’ is a fun, lighthearted show that will entertain fans beyond the true crime genre. I am so excited to bring this new and unique true-crime series to the masses and hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do.
