Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has defied the odds to make a notable splash at the box office, and is reportedly on the verge of actually turning a profit as its theatrical run comes to a conclusion and its streaming release takes over. With a global haul of $433.5 million against a production budget of $205 million (as per ComicBookMovie.com), the sequel has made it through treacherous waters to do what no other DCEU release of 2023 could manage and become a reasonable success.

While the sequel’s final tally falls short of the original Aquaman’s massive $1.15 billion worldwide gross, it still ranks as the 7th highest-grossing film within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), recently surpassing the Dwayne Johnson vehicle, Black Adam. Its success proves that sometimes even the underdog – or fish – has its day, and as the final movie of the old DCEU, Jason Momoa’s aquatic superhero seemed to be guaranteed to fail, coming in the wake of disappointments such as The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was hit with some very mixed critical reviews ahead of its cinema debut in December, land just a 34% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audience reception proved to – as is becoming the norm – be much warmer, with an 81% approval rating, suggesting a continued disconnect between critics and moviegoers.
When Does Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Stream on Max?
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s transition to streaming on Max is surprisingly imminent. With the movie still to wrap-up its theatrical run, Variety confirmed that Momoa’a potentially final outing as Arthur Curry will hit the streaming platform on February 27. As with many other movies that haven’t quite performed as well as they could have at the box office, the Aquaman sequel is likely to get a lot of attention when it makes its streaming debut and people have the option of watching the end of the DCEU from the comfort of their own homes.
The future of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in the revamped DC Universe, under the command of DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, remains uncertain. Although there have been many conflicting rumors and comments made over the last year and half – many of which have come from Momoa himself – it is still not known exactly what is going to happen with Aquaman in the new DCU timeline.
Aquaman’a Jason Momoa Gives Harsh Critique of His Career: “I Don’t Really Think I’ve Done Anything So Far”
Jason Momoa reflects on his career and believes he’s ‘not going to be able to master all things.’
There have been some rumors that Momoa will continue on as Aquaman, others that he will pivot to playing the anti-hero Lobo, and some that have suggested he will not have an immediate role in the new franchise at all. Which do we believe? Well, it seems safe to assume that Momoa is certainly not done with the DCU, but what and when his next role is seems to be something that only he and James Gunn know, and neither of them are playing ball with the truth right now. However, with audiences clearly on Momoa’s side, it is surely only a matter of time before we discover where his future in the franchise lies.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
streams on Max from February 26.
