Law & Order‘s new cast member, Tony Goldwyn, shares a sweet message ahead of taking over for Sam Waterson’s Jack McCoy. It was announced earlier in February that Waterson would be exiting the iconic NBC franchise after more than 400 episodes as Manhattan District Attorney Jack McCoy. In a statement, Waterson expressed sadness over leaving Law & Order but indicated that he was excited to explore other opportunities. Goldwyn, known for his role as President Fitzgerald Grant in Scandal, will fill the void left by McCoy.

Goldwyn posted about the passing of the torch and his gratitude before his first appearance in Law & Order season 23.

The actor, who will be playing a character by the name of Nicholas Baxter, wrote on Instagram: “Some very large shoes to fill! First episode finished as DA Nicholas Baxter. Thanks to the L&O fam for being so welcoming!Goldwyn makes his debut in the February 29 episode.

Tony Goldwyn Had Another Role In The Law & Order Universe

Goldwyn previously played Frank Goren, the older half-brother of Detective Robert Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio), on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Although he only appeared in four episodes overall, Frank had a memorable arc. Addicted to drugs and gambling, Frank has a shaky relationship with Robert. They have a falling out prior to Frank’s murder. Frank is later killed by Nicole Wallace (Olivia d’Abo), who would routinely get the better of Robert.

It is not unusual for Law & Order to cast the same actors as different characters. Camryn Manheim, an Emmy-winning actress known best for her roles on The Practice and Ghost Whisperer, joined Law & Order season 21 as Lt. Kate Dixon. She remains in the role today, though Manheim had her first guest role on the very first season of Law & Order. She would appear on the show two more times as different characters before signing on as Dixon for the revival.
