The Old Guard star Matthias Schoenaerts has offered an update on when we might see the long-awaited sequel, The Old Guard 2, land on Netflix. Speaking with Collider, Schoenaerts revealed that The Old Guard 2 was shot over a year ago, and while he hasn’t seen anything of it yet, the action movie sequel is now in “the last stage of post-production.”
“We shot it approximately a year and a half ago, and I think they’re hitting the last stage of post-production. As far as I’ve understood, I think there’s been a switch at Netflix high up. I think there’s a different CEO, so that leads to a reconsidering of release, and how and when, and that’s not up to me. I don’t know. But I know we’re hitting the last stage of post-production, so it’s gonna show up at some point.”
“The people I work with there are friends of mine, so it’s always nice to work with friends and to work with a great production team and lovely director, Victoria Mahoney. I’m very curious to see it, actually. I haven’t seen anything yet, so I’m curious.”
The Old Guard 2 Set Video Offers First Look at the Netflix Comic Book Movie Sequel
Charlize Theron, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and KiKi Layne tease what’s to come in The Old Guard 2.
The sequel will see Charlize Theron reprise her role as Andy, and serves as a direct follow-up to the hit original that dropped on Netflix in 2020. Victoria Mahoney directs the new installment, taking over from Gina Prince-Bythewood, with the script by returning screenwriter Greg Rucka. Other returning stars include KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Marwan Kenzari, while Uma Thurman and Henry Golding have also joined the cast.
Theron officially confirmed that filming has been wrapped on the movie back in 2022. But that’s not to say she didn’t come out of production injury-free, as filming the action sequel took its toll on Theron’s body. Noting that she wrapped up her work on The Old Guard 2 in a new interview with THR, Theron also revealed how she had surgery after the shoot, lamenting how she was injured during training rather than while filming one of the movie’s impressive action-packed sequences.
Here’s what Theron said when asked about her reputation as being “tough,” given her willingness to do her own stuntwork:
“I just had shoulder surgery two weeks ago, so there you go. (

Old Guard
, where I was hanging off the side of a helicopter. I so wish that was the story. Instead, it was during training. I was learning to sword fight.”

- Forever is harder than it looks
The Old Guard is based on the original graphic novel by Greg Rucka, who penned the scripts for both movies. The original film follows a group of mercenaries consisting of immortals with the superhuman ability to heal themselves. Full plot details haven’t been divulged for The Old Guard 2, but Theron has previously teased that it will be bigger and better than the first movie.
“It is pretty impressive what we did, because it felt very specific, the first time around, and we wanted to kind of like take it out of that. What we let the audience think was that set world, and we really kind of turned that on its head. So, I’m excited about that. We have a bigger cast, and it feels more global. It’s a big movie.”
