Invincible Season 2 Continues The Trend Of Upending The Superhero Genre

Even in a market oversaturated with superhero content, Robert Kirkman’s series continues to tell new and effective stories, as evidenced by each strong Invincible season 2 part 1 review. The series dives deep into the psyches of its characters and showcases Mark’s continued struggle with the revelation of who his father really is. Though other shows like The Boys are quick to show the dark sides of superheroes and superhero culture, Invincible takes that a step further in exploring the space between the genre pillars of good and bad.

Whether or not Invincible takes place in The Walking Dead universe, the show’s massive scope is part of what allows it to buck superhero genre conventions. Plenty of superhero offerings tackle intergalactic stories and travel, but Invincible does so to create a context that further muddies the water between good and bad. Omni-Man does terrible things in the series, but within the context of the larger Viltrum Empire, it’s easy for audiences to see how he may be a lesser evil. As Mark comes to understand that, he is challenged to find the nuance in what he once believed to be a black-and-white situation.

Just as exciting is the ground that Invincible season 3 will be able to cover, and how that will continue to innovate within the superhero genre. The first half of the show’s second season only adapts up to issue #29 of Kirkman’s comics–he full series ran for 144 issues in total, meaning there is plenty of story left to tell. As the Prime Video series continues, it will undoubtedly offer twists and turns that no other superhero property can provide.

Invincible

Based on the comic book character by Robert Kirkman, Invincible follows Mark Grayson,  a seventeen-year-old who leads a seemingly average life save for the fact that he lives behind the shadow of his superhero father, Omni-Man. Mark goes on to develop superhuman abilities, but he must also learn that his father’s legacy isn’t as glitzy and glamorous as he’s been led to believe.
