universe.
A new report reveals the reason the upcoming spinoff show Dune: Prophecy did not have a trailer to accompany the release of Dune: Part Two. Currently expected to arrive on Max in the fall this year, Dune: Prophecy will serve as a prequel series to Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed movie adaptations of Frank Hebert’s novels. Set thousands of years before the rise of Paul Atreides, the upcoming spinoff show will chart the origins of the mysterious and influential order known as the Bene Gesserit.
According to an anonymous source cited by TVLine, it is still “way too early” for Dune: Prophecy to begin running trailers, despite the show’s anticipated release later this year. While filming officially began in November 2022, the show is still actively in production despite principal photography wrapping in December 2023. Meanwhile, there could still be up to nine months before the show premieres, meaning it is too early to begin actively marketing it.
While
Dune: Prophecy
is slated for a fall 2024 release, a more specific release date has yet to be announced.
Could Dune: Prophecy Mark The Start Of Bigger Plans For The Dune Franchise?
While Villeneuve is adamant that his plans for the
Dune
franchise will end after
Dune: Messiah
, Warner Bros. may want to continue exploring Herbert’s sci-fi universe long after his departure.
While the original Dune author Frank Herbert only penned six novels set in his expansive science fiction universe, the franchise has since expanded to include a total of 23 novels and 13 short stories spanning some 15,000 years of history. Widely regarded as one of the most influential and intricately detailed science fiction properties, current and previous film and television adaptations have only begun to scratch the surface of Dune’s true potential.
While Villeneuve is adamant that his plans for the Dune franchise will end after Dune: Messiah, Warner Bros. may want to continue exploring Herbert’s sci-fi universe long after his departure. Moreover, with Dune: Prophecy introducing a corner of the Dune universe that existed millennia before Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides ever set foot on Arrakis, it could also potentially pave the way for countless potential spinoffs to follow.

Dune 2 Ending Explained: Paul Atreides’ Endgame & What It Sets Up
Dune 2’s ending delivers an epic conclusion to this chapter of Paul Atreides’ story, as the sequel also teases what is next for the sci-fi franchise.
Whether it be the ancient jihad that first caused the Dune universe to reject artificial intelligence or the great scattering of humankind among the stars that occurs thousands of years after Paul’s ascension to Emperor, the greater Dune franchise is ripe for further exploration on screen. Given the overwhelmingly positive response to Dune: Part Two, this year’s Dune: Prophecy could potentially be the start of a much bigger journey into one of the world’s most expansive and imaginative science fiction properties.
