- The introduction of Bore Worms could potentially change
Star Wars
canon forever, leaving a lasting impact.
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Mace Windu #2!Krayt Dragons are monstrous creatures that should absolutely be feared in the Star Wars universe, but Mace Windu just faced another ‘sand worm-esque’ monster that puts the Krayt Dragon to shame for one very important reason in particular: they’re immune to lightsabers. Krayts may be strong, but there’s no evidence to suggest that a lightsaber wouldn’t injure one, which is something a Bore Worm cannot relate to.
In a preview for Star Wars: Mace Windu #2 by Marc Bernardin and Georges Jeanty, Mace Windu is on a mission to extract a pirate who has her hands on the formula for a new type of coaxium. This formula would allow starship engines to run at 120% capacity, meaning if criminal syndicates learned how to refine this new fuel, they’d be able to outrun any and all Republic ships. During the extraction, Mace Windu and the pirate, Azita Cruz, run into more than just criminals, however, as they’re quickly facing off against Bore Worms.
Windu and Cruz retreated into an ice cave to escape some pursuing villains, and they ran right into two Bore Worms. At least, that’s what Mace Windu discovers is right in front of him, as he didn’t recognize this creature, and had no idea what it was before Cruz blurted out its name in horror. That means Windu didn’t know the Bore Worms were immune to lightsaber attacks, though he quickly realizes that when his strikes had no effect.

Star Wars Redefines Mace Windu’s Death With 4 Words
Mace Windu’s death is one of the most tragic & significant in Star Wars, and with 4 words, that moment was redefined forever (& in more ways than 1).
Bore Worms Aren’t the Only Star Wars Creatures Immune to Lightsabers (Not Krayt Dragons)
While they are the latest, Bore Worms are not the only creatures in the Star Wars galaxy with hides that can repel lightsaber attacks, as there’s another prominent life form with a similarly strong outer shell: Zillo Beasts. A Zillo Beast is a kaiju-like monster that first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and later made a return to canon in The Bad Batch, and then again in Star Wars: Age of Resistance – Kylo Ren #1.
Like the Bore Worm, Zillo Beasts have organic armor that is impervious to lightsaber attack. However, as discovered by Anakin Skywalker, the Zillo Beasts’ armor is plated, and its large size makes the openings between those plates more vulnerable to attack, especially from enemies as relatively small as human-sized Jedi. The Bore Worm, however, only looks about 6 meters long, as opposed to the Zillo Beasts’ gargantuan 100 meters, with no spacing between its lightsaber-resistant shell, making this new creature actually more dangerous in terms of its lightsaber immunity.
The Introduction of Bore Worms Could Change Star Wars Canon Forever
Palpatine is obsessed with developing Zillo Beast armor. Perhaps he should shift to Bore Worms.
As shown in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, Palpatine is obsessed with developing Zillo Beast hide into armor that can be used to guard against lightsaber attacks. Palpatine even went so far as to clone Zillo Beasts (as shown in The Bad Batch) to make that dream a reality. However, now that Mace Windu has had a run-in with Bore Worms (during a mission that’s set before the Clone Wars), then perhaps Palpatine would want to investigate that creature as a source for his lightsaber resistant armor – and perhaps he will.
Palpatine could very well know about the Bore Worm and develop armor using its hide without anyone even knowing. Or, maybe Mace Windu didn’t pass along the information he learned while on this mission about the Bore Worm (he didn’t know about it himself beforehand, after all). But, regardless of whether Palpatine finds out about it or not, the biggest takeaway is that Mace Windu encountered a ‘sand worm-like’ monster in Star Wars canon that’s immune to lightsaber attacks, which absolutely puts Krayt Dragons – and Zillo Beasts – to shame.
