Academy Award winner and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star Nicolas Cage has confirmed that he has had talks with the studio about reprising the role of Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming live-action series. Speaking with Collider at SXSW, where he was promoting his upcoming horror movie Aracadian, Cage explained his love for the character and confirmed that conversations are ongoing.
“Well, I can say that we have been talking. It’s no secret that I love the character. I think the character provides another mash up of sorts. I can combine my favorite golden age performances, i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee’s masterpiece. I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney, but nothing’s definitive yet. It’s just conversation.”
Spider-Man Noir was first introduced in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 2009. Part of the Marvel Noir universe, aka Earth-90214, this alternate version of the superhero is a noir-themed take on the beloved character and fights crime in New York during the Great Depression. Unlike his original namesake, Spider-Man Noir was bitten by a spider that emerged from a spider-god idol while attempting to bring down a smuggling ring. Much like the original Peter Parker, Noir was imbued with super-human abilities based on a spider, and ultimately becomes a masked vigilante as he wages a one-man war on crime.
Nicolas Cage Still Hopes To Be Part of a Star Trek Movie
Nicolas Cage, a self-described Trekkie, has some conditions to joining the Star Trek franchise.
Cage, meanwhile, voiced the character to perfection in the 2019 Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It is not yet known what the overall plan for the Spider-Man Noir live-action series is, or whether it will be linked to the animated franchise, but having Cage return to the role is surely something that audiences would love to see.
The Spider-Man Noir series is now in the works at Amazon, with Orien Uziel (22 Jump Street, The Lost City) on board as writer and with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as producers.
Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir Expected to Play Bigger Role in Beyond the Spider-Verse
While Cage did not play a role in last year’s animated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, based on the final moments he is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse sees Gwen Stacy assembling a team to save Miles Morales, bringing together Peter B. Parker, Mayday, Spider-Man India, Spider-Punk, Spider-Byte, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, and Spider-Ham and entering the madness of the multiverse.
While we wait and cross our fingers that Nicolas Cage will lead the Spider-Man Noir live-action series, the actor will next protect his sons in the action horror movie, Arcadian. Set in the near future, Cage and his two sons live in tranquility by day and torment by night as they face unrelenting attacks from a mysterious and violent evil when the sun goes down.
Arcadian
is due to be released in theaters in the United States on April 12, 2024, by RLJE Films.
