Gosling’s 34-year-old stunt double, Logan Holladay (Iron Man 2, Inception, Logan, Bad Boys for Life), is the stunt performer who broke the record, which was previously held by stuntman Adam Kirley. Kirley pulled off seven cannon rolls while filming Daniel Craig’s first James Bond movie, Casino Royale (2006). Director David Leitch addressed Holladay’s record-breaking 8.5 cannon rolls in a statement (per NBC):

“With The Fall Guy, I’m honoring my roots as a stunt performer. We wanted to deliver action that was true to the spirit of the stunt community by incorporating techniques that have become somewhat of a lost art. The cannon roll is a classic stunt and was a must-have for this film. And since we were making a movie that honors the work of stunt performers, we didn’t just set out to achieve the cannon roll; we set out to break records and make a statement. Logan executed it flawlessly and showcased why he’s a standout in the stunt community.”

The Fall Guy’s rave reviews and high Rotten Tomatoes score out of the SXSW film festival preceded the movie’s box office opening this May by almost two months. However, during the action comedy’s production in December 2022, stuntman Logan Holladay pulled off the Guinness World Record-breaking 8.5 cannon rolls on location in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Holladay drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee on one of the beaches in Kurnell, Sydney to break the record. Ryan Gosling, who portrays stunt performer Colt Seavers in the film, said of his real-life stunt double (per Universal Pictures):

“The day that we shot the cannon roll was definitely the most emotional day I’ve ever had on a set. And it might have been one of the most tense days of my life. The record-breaking cannon roll was done by Logan Holladay. An incredible amount of things have to go right and be perfect in order for this to work. Logan Holladay is being recognized by the Guinness World Records for the most cannon rolls in a car.”

Double is the excitement when a movie about a stunt double stars one Ryan Gosling. Here’s everything to know about his upcoming action film.

The Fall Guy’s co-star, Emily Blunt, was on set for the record-breaking stunt. The actress added:

Just [an] eruption of cheers — so exciting for Logan.

While The Fall Guy might fall short of Gosling’s last film (Barbie, the highest-grossing picture of 2023), time will tell if Gosling and Blunt’s big-screen action comedy will break any box office records to go along with its Guinness World Record feat of 8.5 cannon rolls. Plus, while the film’s current 87% Tomatometer rating is encouraging, there’s still the question of whether audiences will actually enjoy director David Leitch’s love letter to the stunt world.

The Fall Guy
opens in theaters on May 3.
