Mary Cosby Is One of the Most Underrated Housewives

The phantom of the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary Cosby, drifts in and out of scenes as she pleases. She takes no prisoners as she rips each of them a new a**hole, and then acts as if she is God’s gift to the world. While I am not one hundred percent a fan of the Bravo personality, there are times that I think the network is underestimating her. Mary is one tough cookie who refuses to mold herself to the legendary criteria, but isn’t this a reason to embrace her? Let’s discuss.

Mary the Badass

A Real Housewives line that will forever live in infamy came from Mary as she spoke to Jen Shah, “I pray that you’re guilty…that you’re innocent.” The Freudian slip was what every viewer thought: the mother of one just had the nerve to send it out into the universe. Since her debut in Season 1, I felt that Mary did what Erika Jayne of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills initially set out to do, which was to make waves according to her own rules.

Mary exudes an unbothered attitude and could give “zero fu*ks,” as Erika claims she also does. The preacher genuinely could care less if the viewers, Bravo, or the cast liked her. To be a no-show at the Season 3 reunion and then still be brought back, which she repaid by refusing to participate with the rest of the cast, is a power move if I have seen one.

Mary and Her Step-Grandfather Husband

When Rosemary Redmond died, she only had one wish for her granddaughter, and that was for her to marry her husband. The premise had me going down a rabbit hole that included a family tree, wills, and asking, “Is this incest?” The only way the Pentecostal First Lady could receive her inheritance, which included millions of dollars and a megachurch, was to marry Bishop Robert C. Cosby Sr. Mary granted her grandmother’s wish and said “I do” when she was in her early 20s, and Robert was in his 40s.

I don’t think many viewers in their right minds would have done what Mary did to have the luxurious life she now has. The Salt Lake City villain once shared this inside look into her decision: “I trusted every word. If she managed to bring this church this far, then she had to be right. And look at my life.”

When Mary Is on, She Is On

When Mary is clocked in, she can’t be stopped. The zingers that have flown out of her mouth have been enough to stop the other housewives in their tracks. Mary was on another level when it came to being a crazy pants housewife, but her delivery has always been pure gold. Some of my favorite Mary quotes are:

“Little girl.”

“Your children need nutrients!”

“She don’t even know she look inbred.”

“With her little judgemental self. She has the snobbiness of a true Mormon…”

And “carbonation hardens your ovaries.”

There is no denying that Mary is mean, but she says each statement with such conviction that you almost have to applaud her for it. At least for Season 1, Mary was organically funny with no prompt needed. Viewers are sleeping on Mary, who is unfiltered and beyond eccentric. She doesn’t have the bandwidth to handle the exposure, but this tends to work in her favor. She doesn’t need collaborations because she has her church, where she will forever reign as the First Lady.

Mary Is Timeless

Bravo/YouTube

When Mary was a guest on Watch What Happens Live, a viewer asked why she decided to return. Without missing a beat, Mary quipped, “Oh, why I wanted to come back? To help you guys out.” And this is the crux of the argument: Bravo might not be able to stand her because she genuinely doesn’t give AF about being on the series, leaving them to admit they do, need her. Not even Andy Cohen was safe from Mary. Phew. Mary is funny sometimes. Personally, I wouldn’t tolerate her presence, but I’m not the one writing her a check either.
