Rep. James Comer and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy are dead right to hold a contempt of Congress charge over FBI honcho Christopher Wray’s head.
The agency is blatantly stonewalling the legislative body over a potentially explosive whistleblower allegation against the president in an FBI informant file by deciding to “stiff-arm Congress and hide this information from the American people,” to use Comer’s pungent words.
Comer was absolutely correct to slam as insufficient Wray’s offer Wednesday afternoon to let him see the document without actually producing it for his Oversight Committee (as required by the legally binding subpoena).
At this point, after all, the public has lost so much trust in the FBI, the onus is now on Wray to prove his agency isn’t protecting Biden yet again.
And anyway, if there’s nothing to the claims in the document, as the White House insists, why not release them publicly?
The whistleblower alleged that the file implicates Joe Biden in a $5 million bribe scheme during his presidential campaign.
So Wray’s stonewalling may qualify as obstruction of justice. But until the public can see the document itself, there’s no way to know.
And given the FBI’s record of protecting Biden, it’s long since lost the benefit of the doubt.
Comer’s committee has already revealed the endless ways in which Hunter Biden and other Biden family members wove a complex web of entities and transactions to sieve payments from what was clearly a long-running influence-peddling operation.
It’s also blown up the president’s blatant lies that he knew nothing about Hunter’s shady dealings.
So there are strong grounds to be suspicious.
And to distrust the FBI.
Take the Durham report, for example, which proved conclusively that in the runup to the 2016 presidential election, the bureau treated its ideological ally Hillary Clinton with kid gloves while engaging in what looks like a coordinated effort to bring down the candidacy (and later presidency) of Donald Trump.
And the FBI and Justice Department stand accused — once again, credibly — of trying to shield Hunter, including by trying (along with Big Tech) to quash our reporting on his laptop.
Other whistleblowers — more than 20 of them! — have revealed the FBI’s blatant political biases against Catholics, pro-life groups and parents who object to woke school curricula.
So again, the burden is 100% on the FBI to prove its hands are clean here.
And if it is indeed running interference for the prez, it’s up to Congress to step in.
Now, a successful contempt charge against Wray opens him up to criminal charges.
Or would, if the Justice Department — responsible for such moves — were not run by Biden mega-loyalist Merrick Garland, who himself stands accused of running political interference for Biden in the Hunter affair and would never act to prosecute Wray.
Which means a contempt holding will likely bring little more than shame on Wray and the Bureau.
Still, Americans need to have faith in the president and his agencies.
Comer & Co. must keep up the pressure and do whatever it takes to shine a light on any and all corruption Team Biden is trying to cover up.
