‘Nonnas’ Starring Vince Vaughn is a Netflix Chart Hit

Among all the action movies, slasher flicks and terrible Wattpad adaptations that frequent the top of the Netflix

chart, a surprising feelgood dramedy starring Vince Vaughn

and Susan Sarandon has managed to break through to the top of the streamer’s chart just in time for Mother’s Day in the U.S. The movie is Nonnas

, and the film based on a true story has been captivating audiences with its heartwarming tale that will “make you feel something amazing.”

Nonnas wasted no time in taking its place on top of the Netflix U.S. movie chart, and with an all-star cast including Vaugh, Sarandon, The Sopranos’ Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Linda Cardellini, and Joe Manganiello, there are plenty of reasons to like this movie based on the story of Joe Scaravella, the owner of a Staten Island restaurant where grandmothers are offered the chance to work as chefs.

Lorraine Bracco and Brenda Vaccaro discuss ‘Nonnas’ and its connection to ‘The Sopranos’

Nonnas stars and cinema legends Lorraine Bracco and Brenda Vaccaro speak about their new film and how it connects to their cinematic legacies.

The movie was released on Netflix on May 9, and as well as cooking up a storm on the charts, the film also received plenty of favorable reviews, landing respective 79% and 74% scores from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has received praise for its simplicity, charm, and sentimentality in a time when the world needs just a little more of that kind of thing to counter the daily horrors experienced by many. It seems that Nonnas is the right movie, at the right time, and is reaping the rewards.

‘Nonnas’ Taps Into Feel-Good Food Vibes

There have been many shows recently to take advantage of a restaurant setting to create stories of family that really speak to audiences. One shining example is The Bear, the incredibly popular series that cannot decide whether it is a comedy or a drama when it comes to awards, but delivers a worthy story of challenges set in and around a family-run food business regardless.

Nonnas taps into a similar set of themes. This time, though, it has the added benefit of being based on a true story, but its real strength is not being another story that relies on audiences being put through misery and endless strings of terrible events before getting a resolution that leaves them still feeling a little down. Nonnas instead drives its story with a show of camaraderie, friendship, and a relaxed and joyous energy that just isn’t seen enough in mainstream movies.

Yes, the movie does also deal with grief, but not in a way that brings anyone down. Instead, it inspires, delights, and is clearly resonating with audiences after debuting at the top of Netflix’s competitive movie chart. It probably won’t be too long before it is replaced by something much less worthy or at least something filled with apocalyptic prophecies and endless death, so maybe now is the time to forget about your troubles and click on Nonnas on Netflix. There could be worse ways to spend an afternoon, and you would clearly be in good company.
