Outer Banks is a Netflix series that follows teenagers living in the Outer Banks, a beach town separated by class but brought together by treasure and competition. The Pogues are working class, living off of the tourism industry, and can’t stand to see the rich Kooks prancing around. The Kooks are stuck-up rich kids living in mega-mansions. The Pogues and Kooks couldn’t be more different, and barely interact until John B. and Sarah start seeing each other. In some ways, that brings them together, but in many other ways, it drives the groups apart even more.
The third season brings everything from the first two seasons to a dramatic head. At the end of Season 2, the Pogues and Sarah’s family have a standoff on a cargo ship that results in the Pogues being stuck on a deserted island. They call this island Poguelandia and survive much more comfortably than most people in that situation would. In the first episode of Season 3, a plane spots the friends on Poguelandia, and they think it’s a miracle. Once aboard, they realize the pilot is not who he says he is, and they’re in trouble. This jump starts all the drama and danger of Season 3.
Here are all the characters in the popular drama series.
Chase Stokes as John B.
John B. is played by Chase Stokes. He is the main character of Outer Banks. His father, Big John B., disappears and is presumed to be dead early in the series. He wants to avenge his father’s death and find the treasure his father “died” in pursuit of. He is the charming leader of the group, who would do anything for his friends, but keep them out of trouble. His treasure-focused adventures with his friends tend to put them in sticky situations that his clever thinking always gets them out of.
Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron
Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) is the daughter of Ward Cameron, a rich Kook who has a pension for lying, killing, and just generally being a bad person. Sarah, on the other hand, is more of a Pogue. Sarah and John B. have an intense romance, and she quickly becomes a member of the group. She goes through a big transformation throughout the series going from “Kook Princess” to dating the King of the Pogues and essentially being an orphan after her father tries to strangle her.
Rudy Pankow as JJ Maybank
Rudy Pankow plays JJ Maybank, the brawn of the Pogues. He is hot-headed with a huge heart. He takes one for the team with his friends because, unlike the rest of them, he doesn’t feel like he has a future after high school. He is a troubled character whose past defines him more than it needs to, and his lack of self-worth throughout the series only makes that worse. In the third season, he develops feelings for his best friend Kiara but self-sabotages that several times.
Madison Bailey as Kiara Carrera
Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey) is the voice of reason among the Pogues. Even though she lives in Figure Eight, the rich part of town, she has been a Pogue for life. Her family doesn’t approve of her friendships with the Pogues, and they try their hardest to ensure a better future for her, but often just end up hurting her. Kiara and Pope have a short-lived romance in Season 2 and no matter how hard she tries to resist it, she likes JJ just as much as he likes her.
Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward
Jonathan Daviss plays Pope Heyward, the brains of the group. He has the best shot at a future outside the Outer Banks but shows time and time again that he is willing to throw that away for his friends. While he is more cautious than his friends in the first two seasons, in the third season his unlikely friendship with Cleo brings out a wild streak in Pope that nobody could’ve expected.
Carlacia Grant as Cleo
Cleo is played by Carlacia Grant. She shows up in Season 2 of Outer Banks when she goes against her captain to help the Pogues, landing her a spot in their group. She is rough around the edges and street-smart but has a soft spot for Pope and his family. She never expected to have a family of her own and quickly becomes a fan favorite in Season 3.
Charles Halford as Big John Routledge
Big John Routledge (Charles Halford) is John B’s dad and was allegedly killed by Ward Cameron. He was always more of a friend and treasure hunter than a father, but his love for his son runs deep. At the end of Season 2, it is revealed that Ward didn’t kill Big John and that he was alive in Barbados trying to find a way to reconnect with his son. Once Big John is back, the real treasure hunt starts, and he is an essential part of the group’s success in Season 3.
Charles Esten as Ward Cameron
Charles Esten plays Ward Cameron, a criminal who feigns the role of a devoted father. The only thing he cares more about than his assets is controlling his family and his narrative. He is the kind of powerful where he can kill someone, or multiple people, and not even break a sweat because he knows he can buy his way out. Out of all the characters on Outer Banks, Ward changes the least.
Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron
Rafe Cameron is played by Drew Starkey. He is the son of Ward and Sarah’s brother. While he’s not as inheritably evil as his father, he is not exactly a model citizen. Rafe is motivated by money, power, and independence. He has some redeemable moments but is generally very misguided and greedy. He seems to want to do the right thing occasionally and hopefully, viewers will see that side of him more in Season 4.
Most of the characters on Outer Banks have grown their success and popularity as a result of their role on this show. A good amount of them have had major character arcs throughout the series and hopefully that continues in the next season.
Outer Banks is available to stream on Netflix.
