Tom Hardy’s First Major Movie ‘The Trench’ Lands New Streaming Home

Every movie star gets their start somewhere. Some act in dodgy and embarrassing commercials, others move from the stage to the big screen, and occasionally, an actor’s big break comes alongside some other future A-listers in an underappreciated film. The latter is the case with Tom Hardy. The actor, who is best known for starring in mega hits like Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception, Peaky Blinders, the Venom franchise, Warrior, and so many more, first appeared on the big screen in 1999’s The Trench, and the film just landed on a new streaming home.

The Trench recently began streaming on Prime Video

, and US readers can also watch the film on Peacock

. Written and directed by William Boyd, the film is set in June 1916, during the height of the First World War. History buffs will recognize that date as the month of The Somme, one of the biggest massacres of WWI, where Allied soldiers were lured into a trap by the Central Powers, resulting in the death of over 300,000 soldiers and wounding over 1 million. The Trench sits with the Allied soldiers in the moments before they go over the top on that fateful day. The official synopsis reads:

“June 1916. The British Army is planning a big offensive in the Somme region in France. We follow a platoon of British soldiers as they sit in a forward trench, anxiously awaiting the order to go over the top.”

Tom Hardy’s ‘Lawless,’ ‘Locke,’ and ‘Warrior’ have arrived on Tubi.

Tom Hardy’s appearance in The Trench is small (if only they knew how much of a mega-star he would later become), as the actor plays an uncredited soldier in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role. As well as launching his career, The Trench also allowed Hardy to work with established and future cinematic royalty. The film also starred Paul Nicholls, Daniel Craig, Cillian Murphy, James D’Arcy, Ben Whishaw, Danny Dyer, and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

What’s Next for Tom Hardy?

Tom Hardy in Havoc
Netflix

Hardy’s career between The Trench and now should need little recapping for even the most casual of moviegoers. The actor currently stars in Netflix’s latest action blockbuster, Havoc, directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans. Hardy also makes up the ensemble cast of Paramount+’s MobLand series, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

The biggest project in Hardy’s future pipeline is undoubtedly Mad Max: The Wasteland. George Miller’s next entry in the rebooted/revived Mad Max franchise will take place shortly before the events of Fury Road. Fans of the petrol-headed action franchise have already driven back in once since Fury Road‘s release with 2024’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film was well witnessed by critics, but was deemed mediocre at the box office. Hopefully, Tom Hardy’s return in The Wasteland can put the multi-Oscar-winning franchise back on track.

Hardy is also expected to appear in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie. Hardy played Alfie Solomons in the hit British period thriller, reuniting with his The Trench co-star, Cillian Murphy. Hardy’s return as Alfie in the new movie hasn’t been officially confirmed. But, considering the character (somehow) survived the past six seasons, fans are hoping to see Alfie one more time.
