The winner has been announced for this year’s Best Performance in a Movie award at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Following a year of immense success for the hit film, Top Gun: Maverick picked up another big win with star Tom Cruise earning the award. Knowing Cruise, it’s also no surprise at all that the actor chose to provide his acceptance speech for the golden popcorn while flying through the air in a jet. We can hear him accepting the award while thanking the fans through a transmission from the aircraft. You can watch the video below.
“Hi everyone, thank you so much for this award,” Cruise says. “I make these films for you, I love you. I love entertaining you. I know how much you enjoy it. How much you appreciate it. There’s just no better feeling.”
Cruise then encourages his fans to go see his next movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which hits theaters in July. Given how much credit Top Gun: Maverick has been given for revitalizing the movie theater business following the pandemic, Cruise wants to keep things going by having the people come out to support his next big sequel as well.
“I hope you enjoy Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. It’ll be coming out in July,” Cruise adds. “It is a wild ride. You have a wonderful summer. Thank you again for letting me entertain you. It’s an absolute privilege. We’ll see you at the movies!”
Tom Curuise Gets a Big Win
The competition as pretty stiff, and it was hard to predict who may be winning this award. The nominees included Austin Butler for Elvis, Florence Pugh for Don’t Worry Darling, Keke Palmer for Nope, and Michael B. Jordan for Creed III. It’s also one of several times Cruise has been nominated for the award, with his first nomination going back to 1993 for his role in A Few Good Men. He previously won twice, once for Jerry Maguire in 1997 and again in 2001 for Mission: Impossible 2. His other nominations include A Few Good Men in 1992, The Firm in 1994, and The Last Samurai in 2004.
Looking over the past few years, some of the other winners for this award include Tom Holland for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, Emma Watson for Beauty and the Beast, and Charlize Theron for Mad Max: Fury Road. Chadwick Boseman also won twice, once for Black Panther and again for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
It’s possible Cruise could get nominated again for his new film, given as he was previously nominated for Misson: Impossible 2 and he’s riding high off of the success of Top Gun: Maverick. Misison: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 12, 2023.
