The Law & Order universe is set to expand with a Toronto-based spinoff touting a familiar name. Created by Dick Wolf, the Law & Order universe has been ongoing since the series first premiered in 1990. Since then, there have been many spinoffs, including the still-airing Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Now, Variety reports that a Toronto-based spinoff will be joining the current slate of Law & Order shows being produced. The series, titled Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, follows a group of elite detectives investigating major criminal activities in Toronto. The show pulls its title from Law & Order: Criminal Intent, a US-based spinoff starring Vincent D’Onofrio, which ran from 2001 to 2011. Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent will run for 10 episodes, which are set to premiere in Spring 2024.
How Big Is The Law & Order Universe?
The Law & Order universe currently boasts three airing series, both previously-mentioned spinoffs and a revival of the original Law & Order. All three Law & Order shows were renewed by NBC in April, securing the franchise’s future for the 2023-24 broadcast TV season. The renewal confirmed the future production of Law & Order season 23, Law & Order: SVU season 25, and Law & Order: Organized Crime season 4.
Law & Order has also seen multiple series that have ended, such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Law & Order: LA. Another series, Law & Order: True Crime, has been on hiatus since its only season aired in 2017. The franchise has also had crossovers with the Chicago universe, which is produced by Wolf Entertainment, the same production company behind the Law & Order franchise. This makes Law & Order one of the largest TV franchises currently airing.
Despite having a decades-long history, Law & Order still manages to bring excitement to the table when it comes to its many crossovers. The recent Law & Order season finale crossover event saw many shocking story twists transpire, including the death of Law & Order: Organized Crime‘s Jamie Whelan. With the addition of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent to the Law & Order universe, there’s no telling what’s next for the ever-expanding law enforcement franchise.
