Did Matsson Just Lose? Succession’s GoJo Shocker & Future Setup Explained

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Succession season 4, episode 7!

Succession season 4 has been a constant conflict between the Roys and Lukas Matsson over the GoJo deal, and it seems like Lukas Matsson may have finally lost in Succession season 4, episode 7. GoJo’s acquisition of Waystar Royco has been one of the biggest storylines in Succession so far, with CEO Lukas Matsson’s plan to buy out the company possibly changing everything. Although the GoJo deal seemed imminent, things have just been flipped on their head, with Succession season 4, episode 7 revealing a shocking new detail about Lukas Matsson and GoJo that will change the future of the show forever.

Succession season 4 is the final season of HBO’s beloved comedy-drama, with the series following the Roy family as they attempt to run Waystar Royco, a massive multimedia tycoon. Succession season 4 has already been a wild ride so far, with the season featuring the shocking death of Logan Roy, the main antagonist of the series. Succession episode 7 continues to show how the Roy siblings are dealing with the fallout of their father’s death, with Kendall, Roman, and Shiv attempting to shepherd the GoJo deal. However, a wrench is thrown into things when GoJo CEO Lukas Matsson unexpectedly shows up at Shiv’s party.

GoJo’s Inflated Subscriber Numbers Are Terrible For Matsson’s Future

One of the biggest reveals in Succession season 4, episode 7 is that Lukas Matsson has been inflating GoJo’s subscriber numbers. The biggest reason that GoJo is so valuable in Succession season 4 is its immense growth, with the up-and-coming business being one of the hottest brands in the media market. However, Kendall and Roman get an employee named Ebba to spill, with her explaining GoJo’s scheme. As it turns out, GoJo has been knowingly overstating its subscriber numbers in India, massively inflating its growth. Now that the Roys know about this, the future of the GoJo deal is on pretty shaky ground.

This controversy almost certainly means that Lukas Matsson has finally lost in Succession season 4. As Shiv points out, fraud on the scale of GoJo’s is grounds for Waystar Royco to pull out of the deal, which is exactly what Kendall and Roman have been looking to do since becoming Waystar Royco’s co-CEOs. Matsson is already in hot water due to some harassment allegations that are starting to come to the surface as well as Matsson’s Holocaust Tweet, and this could be the tipping point that ruins him. Fraud like this could easily take down Lukas Matsson, but it could also take down GoJo as a whole.

Ebba Turning Against Matsson Is Even More Bad News For Him

Ebba in Succession season 4

Previous episodes of Succession have introduced Ebba, GoJo’s Head of Communications, and season 4, episode 7 proves how important she might be. While in Sweden, Lukas Matsson confessed to Shiv that he had been acting really creepy toward Ebba. Matsson has sent her a pint of blood in the mail as well as clumps of his hair, things that could obviously get him in trouble if they became public. Kendall and Roman find out about this incident in Succession season 4, episode 7, giving them a bit of leverage over Matsson, but their conversation with Ebba proves that more bad news is coming Matsson’s way.

Ebba has fully turned against Lukas Matsson in Succession season 4, episode 7, having become fed up with his jokes and harassment. Although Ebba is still an employee at GoJo, she knows she’ll be let go soon, meaning that she has nothing to lose. Because of this, she tells Kendall and Roman about GoJo’s inflated growth numbers, but that’s only the start. Ebba’s knowledge of Matsson’s controversies and schemes makes her an incredibly powerful asset, one that has the ability to take Matsson and GoJo down. Although Ebba could keep quiet, season 4, episode 7 makes that unlikely.

Could Waystar Really Buy GoJo Now?

Kendall Roy speaking about Living+ in Succession Season 4 Episode 6

The end of Succession season 4, episode 7 reveals Kendall’s next big scheme: buying GoJo. As Kendall tells Frank, he wants to go “reverse Viking,” with him hoping that Waystar Royco can buy out the company rather than GoJo buying out Waystar Royco. Frank explains that there would have to be serious issues with GoJo for this to work, but as Kendall points out, the inflated growth numbers could be just what they need. Although it seems like a stretch, it is possible that Waystar Royco could buy GoJo, adding a surprising twist to the end of Succession season 4.

New episodes of Succession air Sundays on HBO.
