The cancellation of The Wheel of Time has barely had time to sink in, and it looks like Amazon are already looking for their next replacement fantasy project in a popular young adult romantic fantasy trilogy. Prime Video still has The Rings of Power flying the big-budget fantasy banner for the streamer, and it looks like they are not looking to get out of the fantasy game by any means.
As reported by Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios is looking to adapt Lauren Roberts’ Powerless into a new series which is being developed by original Maxton Hall head writer Daphne Ferraro. The book trilogy consists of 2023’s Powerless and sequels Reckless and Fearless, and the first season will reportedly adapt the first novel.

Fans still haven’t given up hope that it can be saved.
There have been few further details revealed right now, but the announcement of a new fantasy project being picked up Amazon MGM Studios so soon after they dropped The Wheel of Time will be a bit of a kick for fans of that series, who are still attempting to bring the show back with an elaborate online campaign.
What is ‘Powerless’ About?
Powerless is set in the kingdom of Ilya where the Elites reign with their incredible powers and hunt down anyone without any. Paedyn Gray, a powerless “Ordinary,” has spent years scraping by as a thief in the slums, hiding in plain sight after the King had her father executed. However, when she saves the King’s second son, she finds herself being pulled into the Purging Trials, a tournament that promises riches and fame, but also potential death. To make it worse, she and the King’s son begin to find themselves drawn to each other in a way that is doomed.
Essentially, the Powerless trilogy has elements of several other fantasy series, most notably Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games, both of which have been incredibly popular in both book form and in their respective TV and movie adaptations. With that in mind, it is not surprising that Amazon MGM would want a piece of the action, especially when the original novel spent 19 weeks at the top of the New York Times YA bestseller list, won several awards, and became incredibly popular on TikTok and YouTube.
While The Wheel of Time fans would much rather the streamer had put their efforts into continuing that story to a more satisfying conclusion. However, there is every likelihood that Powerless will be coming in at a much lower production cost, and with the official line about The Wheel of Time’s cancellation being all about the bottom-line budget, it is easy to see why Powerless could be their best replacement option – even if Wheel of Time fans probably don’t agree.
