Richard Grenell, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, got everybody talking with that post against Governor Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The image shared by Grenell shows Siebel Newsom shopping in L.A. with what looked like a designer handbag, estimated to be worth some $4,000. Social media wasted no time in spewing insults and accusations against this couple for being disconnected from what the city is going through.

The photo shows Siebel Newsom walking with her bodyguard, and Grenell’s caption read, “Dear God. She came to Los Angeles to shop using her $4k purse. Gavin Newsom and his wife don’t care about the chaos.” The insinuation here is that while protests and possibly some disorder are underway in parts of LA, the governor’s wife is completely indifferent, busy with luxury shopping.
Reactions were quick and clashed. One user said, “Leave the wife out unless she starts to insert herself,” ridiculing the fixation on Siebel Newsom. However, some doubled down on this elitist cue, with one commenter remarking, “And doesn’t she look smug while doing it. Problems are for the little people, not someone elite like her.” Another sarcastically quipped: “Maybe she wanted to smell the cars burning,” a reference to times during the protests when cars were set ablaze.
The body’s security also began to garner comments. “Another reason she doesn’t care; she’s secure with an armed guard. No one will rob her!” said one. Another commented, “Funny she has a bodyguard with her. Maybe she had lunch at French Laundry,” taking a jab at Newsom’s infamous 2020 outing at the French Laundry, where he was caught dining without masks during COVID-19 lockdowns.
Some pieces of reaction were more on political lines: one Going after Newsom for his alleged hypocrisy, “He says democracy is under attack. Great answer to that is shopping with a bodyguard.” Another remarked, “These are not bright people.” While another called the couple “tone-deaf.”
Before we could talk ourselves into the negative, however, a few dissenting voices did come forth. One user dismissed the criticism and said, “It’s almost like they didn’t learn anything from the whole French Laundry during COVID episode,” suggesting that. Another sarcastically said, “At least she is contributing to the economy,” alluding to previous comments made by other politicians ludicrously contradicting the significance of civil unrest.
This inevitably brought up again discussions about Newsom supposedly not having ruled California competently when coming to the pressing issues of homelessness and crime rates. One of the in-your-face remarks read, “It’s never their houses or businesses that are torched and destroyed. It’s never their lives that are threatened or affected.”
And even Grenell has gone on record showing his contempt of the Newsom administration: Almost everything else Grenell does has gotten back to the same point that California under Governor Newsom is nowhere representing the interests of the average person:

Neither Newsom nor his wife has come forward to accept or address the backlash so far. In times of rising political turmoil during this phase before elections, this one will surely not go away quietly. Was this really just a mundane shopping trip, or something stuffy enough to merit mockery? The court of public opinion is already calling for deposits.
